I was thinking today, theoretically how insane could a stringed instrument be, yet still be "possible", I came up with a 36 fret bass/guitar/fretted piano tuned F#, B, E, A, D, G, B, E, A, D, G, B, E, A, C#. But then what sort of construction would be required to make this insanity possible? What scale lengths, parts, pickups, and material would be needed, and how could these be implemented?

First of all, there are some weird tuning intervals in there... I think you'd need multiple necks, each with 4 or 6 strings, so about 9-6 necks in total... And then you can move your hand to the neck of whatever range you are playing in... And then it's just like a double-neck as far as construction and pickups and stuff... By the way, how are you gonna hold this?

Well I guess that makes it a little easier with my idea, haha. It might need like a 38" scale for 3 octaves to be used effectively

You would have to go a bit to get weirder than a theorbo although when you hear one they don't sound weird at all.

I think it's gonna be too close to be playable. You can try a very very long scale length but that would make the lower frets too far apart. On some instruments they only make the neck fretted up to a certain point then the rest of the neck becomes fretless.
You could just go with a hyperbass. 4 strings, 3 octave neck, thousands of possible tunings at the flip of a switch (s)

Zon hyperbass. 3 octave neck, custom hip shots on all strings and custom tuner switches on the bridge for each string. Each tuner lever has 2 settings I believe and another 2 at the bridge for each string. MM plays it like this

Now a 3 octave neck 6 or 8 string with the same system would probably lead to mental breakdown lol
