This is the thread for the modern classics that people will one day lament, "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore."

These basses must still be in current production (no tomato tossing if a line goes out of production and this thread is still kicking around). I will start with the Fender Short Scale Mustang P/J Bass:

The build quality is high on those. Speaking of the TMB100/TMB300 they're really well made for the price point, like an average bass at a budget price.

I don't mean "average" as a knock on the bass, I mean "average" as in a bass even a pro could gig with comfortably. I mean you'd expect a bad fret job, plastic hardware and crappy tuners on a bass that cheap, except it comes with a decent fret job, all metal hardware and moving/adjustable parts that are quite solid.

The control scheme is also pretty neat. You don't often find a bass with a stacked master volume / balance with detente knob.

I only have two gripes about the TMB100 at least :

1) The pickguard is ugly and not because it's tort--it's ugly tort
2) The pickups feel cheap and the J pickup is a bit noisy

Still, a new set of pickups would make that bass cost 300 dollars total instead of 200 and you're still beating most other comparable bass prices, but getting a better bass.

Those MIJ Aerodynes look to be an amazingly well crafted bass.

I also agree on the VM jazz. For a budget bass, it's still a modern classic.

I would love the TMB100 body with the P/J configuration and the block inlay neck of the 300 series (unless they make a 300 with P/J pickups).

Yeah, the TMB600 or TMB2000 are like that. They don't hit near the same price point though. I think closer to 600 and 1000 respectively.

From a purely visual point-of-view (I've never played one..in fact I've never seen one around either.....) that bass is making me salivate all over the keyboard..
