Thicker gauge & brass nut question...

Sure thing! It can work with a bone nut as well. You have to file the nut, because they are (mostly) made for medium string gauges. If you have for example a .105 E string and you want to replace it with a .130 B string, then the B string will be a little bit too thick to fit in the nut.

This will probably has to be done with all 4 nut holes (or however they are called :p)
