Thicker gauge flats

I actually had some fret leveling done already and the guy who did it suggested thicker gauge strings with higher tension

Your tech should have been able to get the frets buzz free with the leveling, assuming the strings you had on it are your preference. Do you like the strings you are currently using? A good grind and polish should have been enough to accommodate those particular strings, if that was his reference point in the procedure. Did he happen to mention if your frets had more play to them, meaning they could take a couple more levelings before a re-fret was required?
