Thin Lizzy - Phil Lynott

I TiVo a show called "BBC Crown Jewels". It's a one hour show of a live concert from the past.

They just had a Thin Lizzy concert on it last weekend that I just watched last night. Not sure what year or what venue. The only reference I can make is that they played "Jailbreak" and Phil introduced following tunes as "off the new album". They played "Boys Are Back In Town" and referred to it as older tune.

Phil was playing some Fender looking thing with what looked like a soapbar pup in the "Stingray position" and couldn't tell if there was a bridge pup since he plays with a pick and had his hand over the bridge most of the time. Anyhow, his tone is KILLING!!!:bassist:

Could not see his bass rig at all on stage. But dang was his tone awesome and very prominent in the mix!

This is the first time I've seen live footage of Thin Lizzy. I was pretty impressed by the band overall and especially with Phil's playing and singing at the same time.

I'm was too young to know who they were when they were popular, but I've always liked "Boys Are Back In Town". Fun as heck song to play on bass. After seeing that concert I'm going to have to listen to more of their stuff!

I'm an Irish man so Thin Lizzy have been driven into me for years. I'm a huge fan of Phil Lynott and his bass playing, whilst not technically outstanding, is played beautifully with a great tone. Much more important to me than "flashy" playing. His vocals are great as well.

Sad way for the poor man to go, recently spoke with his mother, lovely woman. For obvious reasons, didn't ask her about Phil's battle with addictions and his untimely death.

I completely agree about his playing. He wasn't doing anything flashy (although singing lead and playing at the same time is more than a lot of us can handle), but his playing was spot on, very articulate. Assertive but not overbearing and drove the songs!

I don't know much about his biography. Will definitely do some reading and listening!

Its quite an upsetting read. I'm not one for getting upset by reading about people I don't know personally, but I get genuinely annoyed when re-reading or hearing about the last years of his life.

Just in case anyones interested, a photo from Wikipedia of the bronze statue on Lynott in Dublin. If any of you get over to Ireland, definitely make a wee trip round to see it.

Aye, I was there in 2005 when the statue was unveiled. Proud day to be an Irishman, let alone an Irish bass player.

Still never live down the fact that my ma saw them at the local forum for £4! I've only seen them without the man himself and it was still an outstanding gig.

As a kid (9, I think), I came accross a mixed tape with Jailbreak and Boys Are Back In Town, and I really loved those songs but didn't know who sung them. Fast forward about thirteen years, I got turned on to the album Jailbreak, and it's criminal that I didn't get to it sooner. Love those guys. Phil Lynott seems like the epitome of cool to me.

Can't recall the name of the movie, recent one too, but A busker goes round and hires a street band that's playing at the foot of Phil's statue. The guitar player wants to know if they're gonna do any "Lizzy? all we play is Lizzy" Good scene.Funny ,they were good too.

One of my all time fave bands, I highly recommend Black Rose or Bad Reputation. Lynott was a great, solid player who really did everything that band needed on bass. So many great songs besides Boy Are Back In Town. I've been trying for years to get my bands to cover some Lizzy songs to no avail. Never got to see them live but a few of my friends have.

I've read both of these books and thoroughly enjoyed them. It was sad to read about his decline. The Rocker had interviews with bandmates and their manager and seemed fairly spot on. What is interesting is that it says in the book that Live & Dangerous is about 80-85% live if I recall correctly. A lot bands frequently touched up live records in the studio and from that time period this is the "most live" live record out.

First time posting here, and it had to be in a Phil thread. :D

I just got into Thin Lizzy less then a year ago, but they've turned into my favorite band. Just like Rockit said above, so many great songs besides TBABIT. I'd also recommend Johnny The Fox, came out the same year as Jailbreak, and it completely smokes it.

Played in a cover band for a little bit, and we played Dancing In The Moonlight, that seemed to get the crowd moving. I just wish we could have played Emerald or Roisin Dubh. :p

A lot of people recommend Live And Dangerous, but I suggest that people listen to Live At Reading. Love his dirty tone on it, and his performance on "Still In Love With You" makes me all weepy.

Damn, I love Philo.
