Things are falling apart

I would consider myself a newbie and hopefully with the wealth of knowledge people have here I can find an answer to my issue. Started playing about a year and half ago. Before that I was stumming a 6 string since the early 80s. I picked.up a Jackson SPECTRA JS2P. Have been loving it. However all of the sudden Im getting dead spots. It started with the 1st fret on the G string. Then the open D. Fretting anything above those is fine. Im not sure if its a string issue or a neck relief issue. The D string literally happened while I was playing. I've had DR black beauties on for a little over a year now. I am planning on a string change to see if that helps. Ive eye balled the neck and it looks pretty straight. No appearant back bow or twist. The only tech I know of in my area us at GC and Im hesitant taking it there as Ive heard horror stories. Appreciative of any and all suggestions.

Year old strings?

I wouldn't touch anything else until you install new strings and make sure your setup is correct.

Thanks, Thats what I was thinking but was hoping for some confirmation. Never had to think about this on a guitar. Id usually break one before they wore out.

Slapped the new strings on. Took care of D string but the G was still messed up. Followed online help to adjust the truss rod as Ive never messed with that. Was very careful not to over do it and Bingo! All is good in the hood again.
