Things I never thought I'd hear a club owner say:

We have one club owner who takes the stage and yells into the microphone "Hey! I don't pay this band sh*t (which is a lie)...you guys really need to be generous with your tips," as he holds up the tip bucket.

We make an extra $200.00 or so every night from tips when he does that, on top of his already generous paycheck.

I wish more club owners were this cool.

How about a gig where we played for the agreed sum(this was in the '80's in a German beer tent, I think about $400.00 for 4 guys/4 hours) & it went so well, they wanted us to play longer, so they doubled our paycheck! Then after another couple of hours(we were pretty cooked, it was a summer afternoon & HOT!) the patrons passed the hat, so we played ANOTHER hour. Totally fried, & we'd played something like 7 hours.......not a bad paycheck at the time. Drunk people all over the stage on the same level, but they never crossed the monitor line at all!

"Hey [name of doorman collecting cover charge]. No need to charge her a cover. She's the bass players wife and it's the end of the night anyway. Let her in."

I had a "discussion" on one occasion with a club owner who insisted on charging my wife a cover even though we had packed the place with our crowd and we were about to begin our last set. My wife could afford the $2 but on principle, I had a problem with it. I suppose that in itself would make an interesting cover charge thread.

This was an actual quote from a club manager:

"I f****** hate when you guys are here I have to work so hard and bring in an extra waitress because it's so busy."

Complaining because we draw a good crowd and keep the till ringing and have a line at the bar. So grateful for filling their pockets. :shakes head:

This club owner statement is true from 35 years ago.

"You guys don't take long enough breaks. I want you to take longer breaks because I sell more drinks when you are on break. When you are playing, everybody is dancing and watching the band and not drinking."

That is way cool.
it is, but...

you guys need to then turn right around and spread the love to the staff, following up his announcement by saying something about tipping them too (since as a rule they really don't get paid sh*t except for tips).
