Who are you talking about??? The Weitz brothers? Todd Alcott? I don't believe any of them worked at Pixar. And PDI was working on a movie about ants (originally mechanical ants) for many years also.So were many other companies that never were able to get funded. For technical reasons, it was one of the easiest and most obvious ideas to make as an early CG film. My experience is not indirect, I was there...

Pixar is a great company with a great story development process. They are also the subject of many adoring fans' idle gossip. Don't believe everything you hear. History is often rewritten by the box office winners.

You are most likely right, I'm just trying to understand how something I thought was universally recognized turns out to be false.

And at the time there was no relationship between Disney and Pixar. Katzenberg certainly had a beef with Disney at the time though.

I think that many of the things we all take as universally recognized truth turn out to not be true when we look a bit deeper. Reality is a complex thing...
