It's a mute. Some people use hair scrunchies. It deadens the strings... the same thing can be done at the bridge end with a piece of foam under the strings. Why you would want to kill all that sustainy goodness is beyond me... but to each his own, I suppose

I'm sorry not make it clear, actually I was asking about the brand of the mute (the V logo), I had scrunchies around my nut bass, and yes I know the purpose of 'em

It's not really a mute, though. It deadens strings when slapping and tapping soon don't get unneeded noise from other strings. It doesn't really mute the strings, as you play on frets higher up than the gruvgear is. They really do their job though.

I just discovered this little doohicky and I'm loving it! I very much like the way it can calm down the overtones - especially on my very resonant fretless - so that the fundamentals carry a little more heft. Admittedly, it's a subtle thing, and I'm curious to see how my impression of it evolves over time. But for now I'm stoked on it.

I've found a sweet spot where it softens the overtones and string noise just a bit and the open strings sound nicely balanced with the stopped notes.

And it's easy enough to push out of the way when you really want all that 'sustainy goodness'.

Bass players the caliber of Victor Wooten use hair bands that can be bought for $1 in the Dollar store, and that's good enough for me too. I'll be putting the difference in the piggy bank for all those other things that I want for the bass: Strings, piezo bridge, pickups, preamp . . . the list goes on.

The best ones are ~$50. You can tune them to the resonant frequency of the neck for more even tone.

These are pretty new- I wouldn't doubt if Wooten uses them now that they're out. His buddy/second bassist Ant Wellington does.

I've used the hair tie thing for years, and had a bit of extra money so I bought a set of these. I dig them- they do a better job of muting because they're got a wide flat area to cover the strings, you don't risk breaking them/stretching them out too much by having to slide them over the headstock, and they don't get in the way when restringing. You could probably make a similar product yourself that would also work better than a hair tie if you're handy. They're only about $9 shipped each, so it's not that pricey- for me it was worth skipping a few beers to pay for them
