Hey guys, I've only been playing about a year. Currently have an Ibanez SR400QM. Ive been looking at a P bass, played a friends and loved it. So what do u think, can the Ibanez and grab a P (affinity, Vintage Modified) or keep the Ibanez?

Thinking about a P bass

Well, those necks are definitely way different...if you wanted to swap you could get a Squier VM or a MIM for what that's worth. A lot of people like having at least one P around because they're such a go-to axe. Such a preference thing though. The Ibanez is more versatile tone-wise, but if the neck and sound of the P do it for you, then that perhaps is where you should go. In a perfect world you could keep both because they do such different things.
I think the Ibanez is a better bass all around. If you like the thicker neck of P bass you might concider a Ibanez atk or one of their other wider neck basses as an upgrade to your Ibanez.
The P Bass is an alternative that I rarely exercised. It functioned as it should, and mostly took up closet space.
If you're ready for a P Bass, there's plenty of very good to excellent alternatives at reasonable prices in this economy. It took me nearly four months to get top dollar out of mine. Have fun on your quest!

The Fender is currently in the F/S section of Talkbass. This isn't a plug for that thread, but what i'm trying to say is that i 'thought' i needed a pbass as well... I dunno....After playing the SR basses for so long, it's hard to feel comfortable on anything else. Especially a big fat hunk of neck like a pbass has, lol. I would definatley keep the Ibby and just add the Pbass and that way you could let go of the one you dont like in the future. I've had mine since February, so I feel like that was long enough to effectively evaluate the bass and make an educated decision on keeping or turning it.

well, unfortunately i cant afford to have two basses, so if i decide to get a P i will either have to sell the Ibanez or trade it. played my buddies mim P again tonight, still love the feel.
Well go and play a VM Pbass at GC and look at all the others as well (the PG squier is an awesome axe). Borrow some money and get the one that feels best to you and has the better sound. Keep both instruments for a while and after a month or so, decide which to keep. Guitarcenter has an awesome return policy, so it's a good fallback when making hard decisions on instruments.
I have just bought a vintage classic Squier to have something cheaper if I travel and need to practise. Last Wednesday I brought it to two rehearsals, and especially in my 8 member funky band it was fantastic! So now I think of buying a US Fender P or rather the new 70 classic MIJ Precision for my funky band.
So I think if you change to a good P you will have a good instrument for multiple genres. I would definitely go and change from Ibanez to VM or if you can afford to classic vintage series.

I would go for the Precision, as it seems you reallly lke it so far, and sell the Ibby. If at some point you decide you don't like the P, you can always sell it and get another Ibby, or whatever basss stikes your fancy at the moment.
BTW, I also can recommend the Squier VM P bass, I love mine( I have the amber transparent model. Very pretty). Any of the Squier VM or CV P basses would do you nicely.
