So I'm thinking about adding an audere preamp kit to my fender PJ bass, but I'm concerned about where the battery would go since the control cavity isn't that big. Thoughts?

Thinking about adding a preamp to my passive bass

I power mine from external via a stereo cord. You need a breakout box somewhere to go to the amp.
It can be a tight fit, but the battery will generally fit in the control cavity without any modification. I've even crammed two in there when I ran 18 volts. Kind of a pain when you need to change batteries though...
To test it out, get a 9 volt battery and try to find a place for it with your current setup.

Absolutely; that's pretty much the entire raison d'être for a battery box. It's a separate compartment, placed wherever makes sense, with an easily opened door for convenient battery replacement.
