thinking about getting my girlfriend an SX gypsy rose

for the past few months, my girlfriend has been showing interest in learning how to play bass or guitar. she is leaning more towards bass, which is good because i can teach her and she can use my stuff.

but i thought she would be more inclined to learn if she had her own gear. she likes all the pink sparkly Daisy Rock stuff. Honestly, they're not bad instruments, but they don't make a bass that costs less than $300.

i've never played an SX, but i see they get a lot of love here. and ive talked to a few guitarists who say Douglas/Agile stuff is great, so i think i can blind buy an SX for 100 bucks and not be disappointed.

the gypsy rose is pink and sparkly, so she'll like it. and i can get it with an amp, strap, and cable for $109. her birthday is coming around in june, so i think it'll make a good gift. i can get it early, restring it and set it up before i give it to her.

plus im getting a little more serious about learning guitar, so i guess we could do some beginner jams together.

eh, i ordered an sx sjm guitar not too long ago... wish i didn't. the frets on it are so messed up and some aren't pushed in all the way. I've tried fixing it myself and there's still dead spots on it and quite honestly, "you get what you pay for" doesn't apply here cause I could've just bought a used squire and probably been happier with that.

It works out for a lot of people but there is a chance you get a really, REALLY awful lemon.

I now own 2 SX's. I ordered my first one about 2 months or so ago and liked it so much I ordered a second. The original second bass that came had a wiring issue so I sent it back and they replaced it - I emailed Kurt and he was more than willing to replace the bass for a new one that worked properly - just got the replacement yesterday and it's a very nice bass.

Here's the thing: Rondo is renowned for their customer service, so if you DO get a lemon, you can either get a refund or replacement with very little trouble at all. If you get a good one, you'll be glad you spent the money - SX makes some very nice stuff for very little cost.

If you got one with issues, why didn't you return it for a full refund?

With Rondo's VERY generous return policy, you aren't really taking any chances.

As far as I know, Rondo only has lefties currently. I've bought 2 of them and either I got lucky or they are a cut above the normal SX stuff. I just did a simple tweek on the setup and they play perfectly. Plan on turning one into a piccolo eventually.

I'd say that you should go for it. There's a guy on here who has posted threads with step-by-step guides for how he makes his SX basses play 1000324234 times better. Look for them.

After going through any of the more major stuff (re-setting the neck, shielding the control cavity/pickup cavity, etc), you could spend another $60 and get a great setup with new strings and make the bass feel and sound like a $500 bass.

If you get a bad one they're usually more than happy to exchange it for you.
