Thinking of buying a Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass

Hello,

So, I have some GAS right now and I want to buy a Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass. Currently I own a '05 (so pre-upgrade) Highway One Jazz Bass and I absolutely love it. It has everything a bass should have, and it is my main (and only) bass.
I have some money right now and I want to buy that Squier P Bass.
The questions:
- Is the Squier a real P Bass? I mean, I want to get the P Bass tone. I didn't wanted to buy the Vintage Modified Jazz, because I allready have a Jazz, I want a P. So does anyone have the VMP? Does it sound like a real P? Well, I know it won't have the American P Punch, but does it sound like a P? I hope you get my question. I want a bass that sounds decent...
- Does anybody have real pics of the bass? Does anybody here own it? Can you tell me all the cons of it? How is the fretwork, is the bass heavy? etc.
- Where can I hear the bass? Does anybody have soundclips with it?

When I bought mine I tried out every Precision from CS to Affinity in all the stores around, and the VM had the best acoustic tone except for a few CS ones. Plugged in it was alive, but a bit dull due to the pickup. Now I've replaced it with a Fender Am. Vintage pickup, and it sounds as good as it gets.

Yep, and I believe that's because of the agathis wood. These basses are often very light and resonant. Soon somebody will probably argue that it doesn't sound like a P if it hasn't the right wood, but what about the difference between light alder in the 60's and very heavy ash in the 70's? A heavy -75 P will most likely sound less like a "real" P than these Squiers do.

what a news! ofcourse it costs more outside US. did you know that musicmans and fenders costs about 900$ in US and around 1500 EUROS in EU?
as for the question regarding Squier - it sounds as P-bass. it IS P-bass. cheaper woods,cheaper hardware etc. but it is still P. Get good strings and new pick up and you might end with really good bass. or you can buy second hand USA P-bass and be happy even more.

I've had mine for 3 weeks and it all I've been playing. It has the sound I need for what I'm playing now.
Mostly classic rock. I really bought it for use as a backup. But I am having a hard time putting it down.
I do own a custom jazz type bass that sounds good for most everything I play. But there just something I like about the VM P Bass. Buy it, it's cheap, plays good and sounds good!
Sorry no photo of it. Maybe next month I'll get the chance to take some.

Someone always has to come in a thread and disagree so its me :)
I had tryed a VM fretless Ala Jaco for a week or two and liked it but needed a P bass so i went back to my fav GC which by the way treats me great.Loved the fretless but didnt see the need in the new blues trio i found myself in. They had new MIM P basses and i'm a MIM fan owned several and love em all. They had one VM P bass same price as the Jaco just had to swap it out and go home ..nice...nope.

I tryed to like the VM-P really did. I had to roll the tone way back to make it sound P-ish at all ...way to high fi when open. I was playing it thru a nice Markbass setup and went to a Ampeg so it wasnt the amp. I tried a ash MIM- P which nailed the full open and semi rolled back P tone but didnt want to spend more :confused: I said well i guess i will get used to the VM- P but really didnt like the tone or the way it felt the weight etc. To me it didnt feel like a real P bass.

I then spotted a used MIM P-05 on the wall for $199.00 had some minor wear but a good neck. It was awsome even sounded as good as a MIA next to it so it went home with me. The VM sounded way off from the used MIM ...IMO. I swapped out the bridge to a american vintage and added a new pickguard some 62 reissue pups , chromes and that used P sounds awsome. The VM -P is ok but ill stick to MIM over them again........ IMO.
