Thinking of re-finishing a Flea bass

I was watching a Flea bass on ebay and was debating buying it to get it re-finished so it looks nice again.

It seems a shame to have a nice instrument look so scruffy.

at the end of the day its just a flea bass. unless flea played it wearing a sock then signed it, I'd refinish it if that's what you desire.

thinking about it.........if flea played it wearing a sock I'd probably wash it thoroughly!

Wouldn't it be simpler to get a 60 reissue and not worry about killing the resale.

The Fender jazz Flea bass is a replica, and just one of many types of basses Flea uses. Looks of a bass obviously has an impact on your choice for basses, as does the name brand that is on the bass.

So, here's another option: get a brand new MIM Jazz bass that looks good to you, and transpose the electronics and pickups from the Flea bass to the new one. Thus, you'll have a better looking Flea bass that has the same sound as the replica.

And, if you decide to upgrade to a Flea Modulous bass, you can re-construct the Flea replica bass and sell it without problem. And you'll still have a complete Fender Jazz bass to play while your're selling the Fender Flea bass.

Maybe re-finishing it sunburst and putting a good coat of lacquer on it would do the trick.

Possibly, but Fender does make a "Classic '60s Jazz Bass Lacquer". Except for the V/V/T knob configuration, the specs should be almost exactly the same. And with the money you'd save getting that instead, you could have it reconfigured to V/T-V/T.
