Hey, I'm asking this question jazz wise and orchestral-esque wise.. My recent instructor told me not to use my left hand-ring finger on the neck.. I played electric bass before and used it of course.. yet I complied with his wishes and changed on the upright. Then I recently read about how (I think it was) Bottesini 'expanded the technique' by using the left handed third finger as much as any cellist. Yeah.
So is there a law against using that finger? Is it ill-advised? I'm not with the instructor due partially to financial issues, but mostly because he was mediocre and had no answers pretty much. So I don't necessarily have to 'GO WITH YOUR TEACHER' if that's the response.
