This bass shouldn't be allowed.

Greetings all!.

So yeah, just as a bit of background, like alot of people, I go through basses like underwear, some I keep, most get moved on. I ended up with only one bass recently cos I loved it so much which is an Ibanez BTB805MS, I even sold my USA standard Jazz because of it which I came to regret recently and this is us getting back on topic...

So I was looking for 4 string basses, Fender esque, was poised on buying a Fender player series P bass for a current punk rock project and due to them (in the UK) now being at a £800 price point on average, I started looking at alternatives, I must admit I wasn't hopeful because I can be a bit of a gear snob quality wise. I like my axes to play well and sound good and I've had some lemons in my time but I digress...

I came across the newish Sire P5 basses, all the reviews were good, roasted maple necks, rolled fret board edges, really good quality basses for the money and I took the plunge and purchased one for under £400 GBP, I will say I also got a set of EMG GZRs right off the bat and they went into the P5 as soon as it arrived so I never tested out the stock pups but Daaaamn!...

Honestly these Sire P5 basses are immense for what they cost, I've had it a few days and I actually prefer it to my old USA standard jazz, well made, neck plays like butter, holds tuning and setup perfectly.
How can it be allowed that a bass this cheap new can be this good! Watch out Fender lol.

If anyone is on the fence about these or wants a cheap good bass, this is your boy, for the same price as a high end squier, and infinitely better than the Fender player series, also at this price it's literally the perfect modding platform if need be.

BLOWN AWAY SIRE, BLOWN AWAY.

EDIT (made this post from phone due to photos)

just to set some things straight as extra info...

* pot shafts on stock pups are 6mm split, had to order new knobs for the EMGs.

* setup was easy, neck was straight as an arrow, i fired a little bit of bow in it and lowered saddles and it was perfect first pass, i play with a pick and managed to get 2.5mm at 12th fret with ease and no buzz in the mix.

* string through body is a godsend and a surprise on a bass this cheap, the stock bridge is a vintage style bent plate but its negated by string through and the saddles are threaded so getting string placement right was easy.

* pickguard looks really good but as you would imagine on a bass at this price it isnt anything fancy or has any depth, but thats ok, its 3 ply white/black/white with a printed effect then top laminate.

* rolled fret board edges are done really well, there isnt any sharp frets or sprout atall, feels as good as my USA jazz did.

* tuners/pegs are fairly good for the price point, i have noticed they can be slightly stiff when at proper tension but they dont go out of tune, i plan on replacing them anyway soon.

* when the guard was off during pickup replacement i noticed the body was very well routed out, neat, plenty of room, bridge was properly earthed and had a holding screw into the cavity with an extra wire from the screw to the pot, it made re earthing it with the new pups very easy, also the under side of the guard is foil taped.

*the nut is well made, a little high for my liking but thats not a bad thing on a new bass, it'll drop as the bass is used and restrung over time.

*Intonation was bang on the money out of the box except the D string, was close but not perfect, easy fix.

* Neck and neck pocket is nice and snug, overall fit and finish is amazing, especially for this price point.

* Balance of the axe is quite frankly amazing for the price, i always test balance at the neck/body join and it'll sit level in my hand, no neck dive to speack of. ive been jamming her tonight with my guitarist mate to settle her in and was going at her fairly hard and she just stays where you put her, very comfortable bass to play.

haha thanks, I actually wanted the white one but there was no stock, maybe thats testament to their mojo who knows lol. but the Vintage aged white is one of 2 of the Rosewood fret board options and im a pure maple board guy for 4 strings procured for the aim of punk rock. theres 4 of these P5's...

Vintage White - Rosewood board
Red - Rosewood board
Mild green (mint green, this one) - Maple board
Tobacco burst - Maple board.

Just wanna add one more thing after hours of testing and playing tonight. aside from re-recording alot of my own bass tracks for project work with this, ive played through a few tracks from Rancid, Millencolin and various other punk bands and she just responds really well to fast pick playing, plenty of clarity which is likely mostly down to the EMG GZRs but the neck and the fret work have allowed me to pure push my luck.

all in all shes a pure beauty and I'm genuinely surprised, blown away and somewhat shocked.

I've been a Sire "True Believer" fanboi from the very start (my V7 is one of the original block, #99 signed by Marcus), I already had a bunch (5) of Sire basses, but all Gen 1, I had to try a Gen 2 just to see what all the fuss is about, so I ordered a D5 last year - it's amazing!!! Those Gen 2 roasted necks with the rolled edges are the best, smoothest necks I've ever played! Just when you think they couldn't raise the "bang for buck" ante any further, they turn around and completely blow me away all over again!

And let's say nothing about their Larry Carlton guitar line - I have 5 now!

My basement is full of Fender stuff but Sire NEVER ceases to impress me !
Hard to believe they can achieve such quality for the price.
And to me, it takes a Fender custom shop neck to better this one here……….and I’m not even sure !
Congrats and play it hard !

As someone who has been using exclusively USA made basses since the 90s I’ve been praising pretty much all these Indonesian made guitars for the last few years. There are some absolute gems that are just as nice as the standard USA lines at almost a 1/4 the price. I think they are all made in the same factory anyway. Ibanez, strandberg, sire and many more.

I’m glad you’re enjoying it! I sprung for the P8 a few months ago when it showed up in stock, and it immediately became my favorite instrument. I’ve also played a couple U5s, and it’s unbelievable how much instrument you get for $500-600. I like my Fender stuff too, but seeing how much Sire charges makes it really hard to justify the Fender upcharge.

Next step for me is probably the 5 string version of the M7 unless something else really catches my eye.

Sire has their own independent factories, but yeah, all of the other factories seem to have gotten the message and upped their "bang per buck" value proposition to match. It's either that, or give up and go out of business. Heck, even Fender has had to respond with increased quality in the lower end of the market. Sire is swinging the entire market, is what's happening.

Every time I go to guitar center to look at basses the entry level sires play better than every other sub $1.2k bass. Their active jazz basses are the most impressive to me at the $400-$500 price point. If you put at $1700 price tag on it and I didn’t know better I would believe it.

So, 70 or so years ago, Leo came up with a bass design that, decades later, can be made by a lot of different folks for a decent price, and you found a version with a few minor tweaks that works well for you. Any bass that inspires you to practice is worth whatever it cost (the practice is the real secret).

Enjoy your bass. Now go and practice.

There are acutally 3 factories in Indonesia now. For a long time there were just 2. Having met a few of the guys and gals working in them, they are some straight up good people. It's not easy to get a decent paying job in Indonesia and when someone gets one, they don't want to lose it. They have good quality materials, good quality machinery, and good quality workers, so there is really no reason to not have a quality product coming out. With that being said, there still are limitations on materials and quality control based on the requiements of the company having them made.

Inspiration has no price guidelines or manufacturer. Play what inspires you to play more.
As for Sires, I have a v7 ash/maple 5er. Love it.
You may enjoy the sire club as well.

Every time I walk into my studio to practice these days my hand automatically reaches for the D-5. My others are probably wondering what the deal is.
