I've been playing bass in working rock bands for 22 years, and recently spent about a month
checking out talk0bass0.0com (remove the zeros) If ten percent of the posters on that site
(all of whom claim to be experts) can even tune a bass, I'll eat my shorts.

If you really want to learn how to play the bass (rather than how to play the role on the Internet
while you hide in your bedroom) I suggest that you find a forum that requires people to identify
themselves publicly, so that their claims can be checked out. (Who ever heard of a real musician
hiding their identity?) The rest are run by greedheads who are a lot more interested in making
money than helping you become a better player.

I hate to say it but judging by the amount of threads asking questions such as "What's the best pick for metal?, What's the best cable for country?, What's the best strap for rock?", and so on, he is probably right. I suspect that many people on this and other sites greatly exaggerate their level of ability and experience. It doesn't really bother me but I can understand why some people might not like it.

I have learned that you really have to search to find a niche on TB, and even then, you have to be very careful what you say. There are a TON of a-holes on this site, and they troll dozens of threads a day, looking for fights. I learned early on that you cannot win against these people, although I think I did get one of them in as much trouble as I got into, when they booted me for a week!
That being said, when you have a common brand, be it basses, amps, or other equipment, it is a lot of fun to share stories with others that share your passion. Same goes for common experiences. I have learned a ton from this forum, and I believe others have as well. One thing I have learned is to laugh at those that I used to fight with. It has been a growth experience!

I've always considered Talkbass to be a repository of gear knowledge/info first and foremost. I wouldn't said it's a hardcore site for instruction on playing the instrument, though there are some threads with great info and answers on topics of that nature. I've saved myself from countless bad purchases and found some KILLER deals on gear here. Sure we goof off from time to time, but that's why it's a bassist community, we're here to share knowledge/experience and have a good time doing it. Some people just can't get that I guess

Ive actually observed a lot of humble people on here who describe themselves as a student and nowhere near where they'd like to be as bass playing is concerned. I myself am one of those people. I dont see whats wrong with people lending their 2 cents on a particular question or thread no matter their skill level.

i would never deny that there are many people on TB that either believe they are, or pose as, experts.

but anyone who doesn't see the value in this forum for a bassist, particularly the BG side of things (just more members, inevitably leads to more opinions/information- sorry DB side!) is foolish. there is so much to learn here. theres a lot to discard, but a lot to learn.

and btw, i'm an expert so trust my opinion guys.

This is an odd phenomenon with the interwebs where some folks are unable to ignore what other folks say; I know that I'm an opinionated guy, so I know that folks will disagree with me a fair amount of the time - which is fine. What is odd is how violently folks will disagree on the 'net - much more so than they'd do in real life. Can you imagine what a day at GC would be like if everyone there communicated like they do on the internet? There'd be shootings!
