Alcohol. Although they must have been very messed up people to begin with. Only a single year in jail for a crime like that is appalling - I think being mauled to death by a pack of wild dogs would be more suitable.

There was a teacher at my old highschool who was nearly killed when her neighbors (under the influence of alcohol & some drugs), made a bet for one of them to break into her place and kill her.....she was seriously wounded but luckily she escaped.

Speaking of drinking we also had not to long ago a month or more. Two men got drunk and decided to see who could hang over an overpass the longest. They said that the guys arms got tired and couldn't pull his self back up. Not only did he fall, but he fell in front of an 18wheeler.
