I dont think its intended to be a joke, but, imo it is.

Heres a little snippet from the product description on the ad:

What a hot, steamy load of BS.! The strings dont "cut" into the frets. Thats just fear mongering, plain and simple.
 
I've had guitars shipped to me with wrapping around the strings like that. (Usually a piece of paper.) Kind of like the plastic sheet that goes over the pick guard and other plastic parts.


I like the colorful design, though. :)
