When I was a lad, my first 'cello teacher told me that laying a 'cello (or bass) on its back put unwelcome pressure on the sound post, which could translate, via the post, into a damaged top table, in the worst case scenario. The neck/scroll pressure is an added drawback.
Of course, like those above, I have almost always transported my bass lying on its back, with cushions under the neck heel and at the top shoulder, to take the pressure off of the scroll and the soundpost.
A luthier can best address the validity/lack thereof of the soundpost pressure issue...I am just parroting what some teacher told me when I was a little kid.

Ha, thanks everyone for the feedback! I'll try to find a better way knowing this to fit my bass into my 99 mazda protege! Not a big car especially when you also have to haul a 4x10 cab for my electric!
