Double Bass Thomastik Dominant string feeling brittle since taking on and off?

Hi there,

This past week I removed my Thomastik Dominant solo A string (top string) to travel with --- and of course never ended up putting it on a different bass --- and now that it's back on my own instrument it's feeling/sounding strangely brittle and dry? I can't tell if it's just grubby and needs cleaning, but even with a wipe down it still feels rough to the touch, and really noisy and hollow when I run my fingers on it. Not like the D which had stayed on, which is still super smooth and quieter with just superficial touch.

Does anyone have any experience with this or have any ideas what's going on? Are these strings not good for taking off and replacing?

I think I bought the Dominants in 2021, and only played for a couple hours a week through the past few years, until this year where I play maybe a couple hours a day. But they have always felt bouncy and smooth and great until now.

Thanks!

Did the problem resolve itself over time?
