Thomastik-Infeld flats on a Kubicki Ex-Factor

I just ordered 34" scale Thomastik-Infeld flats for my Kubicki Ex-Factor fretless. It is 32" scale but the open capo E/drop-D is 36.5" scale. The E should be fine, and I'm hoping the A/D/G will also be the correct length on this bass. I thought about ordering a 32" scale set and a separate longer E, but I'm hoping that splitting the difference between 36.5/32 w/a 34" scale set is best.

Anyone out there have insight here?

Which set did you buy?

JF344?

Those have a winding length of 37" from Ball End to Silk.

The JF324 are actually 36" long.

I ordered the JF344's. So that should work w/the (drop-D) E string. Possibly too long for the rest?

I don't know exactly how the ex-factor's take the new string install... So I can't tell you for sure. Do the strings lock into place or do they wrap around something?

If they lock, you may need to cut them over the full windings.

The stings end is bent about 1/4" and then inserted into a large ratchet-wheel and it wraps around. Cutting is typical as long as not too much. I'll post when they arrive (tomorrow?) for all questions answered.

As an Ex-Factor owner I really wonder if even a 37" string will give the ratchet enough to grab on to with the E string. Eagerly awaiting your results.

Expensive experiment IMHO... I hope it works out well for you though!!!

FWIW - T-I makes all their singles available... So next time you should be able to order a set with the longer E string and shorter A D G strings if needed...

I realize this is an ancient post, but did you ever sort out a set of flat wound strings on an ExFactor?

Hah! I had flats on it for a while - probably the TI's , but being 12yrs ago I don't remember any details. I have rounds on it now - BEAD.

I'm just updating this in case people are interested. I bought a set of Extra Long Scale Labella Deep Talkin Flats (760FS-XL) for my Kubicki Ex-Factor and they fit well. The E string goes over the saddle with about 3/4 inch extra before the silk wrap starts. All of the other strings fit with the end bend for the tuners fully on the silk wrapped part of the string and 1 to 1-1/2 turns of full size string on the ratchet wheels According to the LaBella website, the standard long set has the same length A, D and G strings as the Extra Long set (38 inches) but the E string is only 36-3/4 inches, so no better fit for the A,D and G and the E wouldn't have gone past the saddle.

I think they sound good. I have basically the same strings on most of my basses. I know it's not what these basses were built for, but I find the tone more useable, and I love the feel.

Thank you for that valuable information. If I had more than one, I'd probably try this to have one "crispy" one, and one "fat" one.
