I have a similar story. I bought 3 basses within a couple months in late 2020 and the only affordable and available flats were Fenders and Chromes. They've all settled into their final tone. The Fenders sound and feel warm and rubbery - currently using a bridge cover + mute - with a strong midrange that really cuts through on stage.
I haven't played the Chromes live but they are more scooped with more high end. I like them too.
I recently put Labella Jamersons on another P bass and they still sound horrible: clanky, hollow, with a weird E. I gigged that bass for 2+ hours last night and the E string just disappeared on stage if I played below the 8th fret, but the strings are aging and getting darker. Waiting to see if any midrange will appear.
