Thoughts on Auditions

I'd want the freedom to move the bassline..
I've had some people tell me what bass to use and actually how to play the line to the degree that they want single finger 8's rather that two finger 8's...and that sort of 'instruction' makes ultimately for a very boring and sterile gig. Imo.

I'm still there....just...and I ignore it now.. but I think thats because the BL trusts me more.
In another band/different band completely and which is the real carrot.. the BL does not get involved the same way.
I think band 1 is his baby completely and utterly and band 2 has better players.

Anyway, I agree, when you meet these types of situations, it often goes a bit deeper than simply bonehead dicatorial BL.

I don't take auditions super seriously, not that I don't want to play well and present myself in a good manner. It's just that there are so many variables in what they are looking for and what happens in band dynamics that I'm auditioning them as much if not more than they are auditioning me. They may be looking for someone with a pink bass, a bigger/smaller amp, is taller, plays with a pick, etc, etc. I think the only thing I've learned is that musicians are weird. If you find a band that doesn't seem too crazy, maybe they have a shot.

That would lead to either "Happy to do it, oh, by the way, my rate just doubled" or, if that wasn't an option, "It was so wonderful to meet you all and don't mind me putting on my running shoes, now where did you say the emergency exit was?"

Its not quite as bad as that..the BL is an excellent player but I think he has been indulged too much so in this band he picked the other guys and told them how to play.
He wants what he wants how he wants...so if we are doing a Petty tune, he wants it as per track..and studio track at that.
I also play with him in another unit...and this is way more democratic. And that's because the musicians collectively are better and we are nowhere near as rigid. Its almost a blowing band because the players have that.
So first band is decent but I get bored more easily with this straightjack AND the material.
The second band is great imv, so I'm just picking my moment when to untangle the two.

And now, I can ignore those overtones more because he trusts me more when I do what I do.
