Thoughts on Epiphone EB3

I have had a few over the years along with 60's and 70's Gibsons. they are pretty well built and good value. They capture the vibe of a 70s EB3L. Due to the 22 fret neck and bridge position they are a very long bass and neck heavy, over 2 inches longer than a 70s EB3L. At the moment I have one, paid 100 bucks for it.

I too have had several of these; currently own one I picked up in a trade. The trick is knowing how to madjust the three-point bridge. A wide strap with a rough bottom takes care of the neck dive, mostly. Heavy? I guess. I'm 70 and it doesn't bother me. They look so cool, and that neck humbucker is very dark. I bring it as a backup, but love playing it. Lighter gauge strings work well on these. I use rounds, as the flats are a lot of tension on the bridge and can pull the studs up (an easy fix); and, flats make a dark tone darker. Some might like that. I find 40-100 Ernie Ball slinkys work fine and last awhile.

I got one, my friend gave it to me a while ago. Made in 2008, plays very well and is pretty well built. If it was a short scale I would have left it alone but with the stock pickups it's sound didn't work for me especially when both pickups on.
I had it modified with Artec guitar pickups (most likely Dimarzio X2N clones) and had the neck pickup moved to the (60s) T-Bird neck pickup position. Turned out excellent, it has a bit of that 80s Carvin LB50 type of sound ala Scott Thunes. Not to mention some Geezer Butler's 70s John Birch SG bass vibes, at least to me.
