Thoughts on Fender Modern Player Satin Jazz

I had the 1st generation mp jazz and the mp jaguar, both great basses for the money! The mp jazz had an amazing range of tones and a beautiful neck. I just sold it to buy a vintage mustang. I hated to see it go but i have returned to playing high end shortscales exclusively (fender,birdsong &gibson). The only thing i dislike about the modern player line is that they are all very very heavy guitars!

yeah the neck is crazy good..I've adjusted the action once or twice in the almost 3 years I've had it.... I'm getting a fretted custom build done which will likely replace this bass but I have the feeling I'll be crazy to get rid of it..

Could anyone please shed some light on the differences between the older and newer versions?

I have the 5 string satin in sunburst and pretty much only use humbuckers on full with tone halfway. I'd like a 4 string as a lighter backup so might get a gloss but I'm worried the tones wouldn't match since the controls look different. Do they both have the same core sound?

I might look at other bases with a similar tone. I like the powerful passive withoutility the "hifi"

Another possibility could be a Fender Blacktop Jazz. It's easily the most powerful and aggressive passive bass I've every tried. But despite it's "ballsiness", you can still mellow it out by varying the pickups and tone.
