Thoughts on the MXR M282 Mini Dyna Comp Bass Compressor?

MXR M282 Dyna Comp Bass Compressor Pedal



Anybody have any thoughts on this pedal? MXR just released this mini pedal and it seems like a decent little compressor. Thinking about getting this one or the Xotic SP.

I'm interested in this pedal even though I don't really need one right now. Could it potentially replace my Pigtronix Philosopher Bass Comp? Maybe.

Back back back in the day the MXR DynaComp and the Ross 'Gray' Compressor pedals were the shiznit and many many bass players used them. I was a Ross guy, had several of their pedals and EHX.

The standard Dynacomp is, IMO, appalling on bass. I was surprised when this pedal was announced but MXR absolutely know what they're doing when it comes to bass pedals so have high hopes they have somehow turned it into a great pedal. Great form factor too.

Just bought it yesterday and it replaces my Darkglass HL. Really transparent and efficient, simple compressor that works really well

I don't know much about compressors, and I keep looking at simpler ones (just because I feel like it's something I need in my toolbox)... but, that lil MXR replacing the latest/greatest Darkglass is a pretty big statement!?!?!?

Of course and im not afraid to say it! The HL is in fact awesome in the way it works. Its smooth and pretty versatile. The only downside, and its a big one, is that it colors the sound in a way I really dont like. Bumps the mids and takes out crispness or clarity of your sound.

Definitely curious to see how people like this little guy. I have a Seymour Duncan Studio Bass that I like (especially the blend) but if this can fill the same needs at a third of the size I’m all over it!

If anyone has experience with this and the Xotic SP compressor I’d love to hear how they stack up.

I really wanted to try this one out too. I liked the ViseGrip (guitar version) pretty much but didnt find any Studio Bass to try around here. Still it seems to color the sound a bit in the mids. Im sure that the MXR M282, which has a blend to, will suit your needs

As far as I know, the Vise Grip and the Studio Bass are identical save for the frequency selection on the blend control- the SB allows Low/Mid/Full whereas the VG allows High/Mid/Full. Iirc the “mid” and “full” positions are identical as well. You’re right about the coloration, too, although to my ear the added mids are pretty subtle and pleasant.

Great!!! Then I think the MXR is definitely worth a try. But your Studio Bass might be the best comp out there. If the sound coloration is as subtle as the ViseGrip I probably would have ended with the Studio Bass if I could have tried one. Damn it haha

FYI Darkglass did admit they got an issue on some HL with the input impedance and mine was part of it. They found a solution and will sort things out with my (or any other) HL. I have to say that I brought the MXR back to the store when Darkglass told me that. Even though the M282 is a great comp, it lacks headroom and distorts a lot when Attack button engaged. Nothing can touch the Hyper Luminal now except maybe the Seymour Duncan which i never had the chance to try. Glad Darkglass took care of that and has good customer service.

Hope I'm not derailing this thread as I too am here to learn about the new MXR comp. But. SeymourDuncan also has limited headroom. Few TB-ers (myself included) could catch distortion with relativley common use (no other devices did distort in that place, with that signal). Someone mentioned it is using THAT 4315 VCA, which I am not sure is the reason.

Thank you for the info on the Seymour Duncan. Really useful to know they are prone to distorting. Helps me stop wanting one lol
