three-fingered gallop

I've never played songs that required much of the fast gallop triple stroke. I've always used either just my right index finger, or index and middle finger for faster passages. But I was just given a song to learn that had lots of the fast gallop throughout the song.

But for this piece, I found that going ring/middle/index finger, it made playing the part much easier. I was wondering if this is what people often do in this situation.

I always play with three fingers. For gallops, if it's a 16th/16th/8th pattern I go ring-middle-index. For an 8th/16th/16th pattern I got index-ring-middle. But no matter what fingering your using, make sure you get even consistent strokes with your fingers so you don't over-accent any notes by accident.

The ring/middle/index 'one note' gallop isn't all that easy to pull off IMO. I've spent more time on that than I can count. My buggaboo is getting evenness of tone when I do that. Plus the smooth continuity.
And I'm a four finger player.

i never thought about my gallop before, but after doing it for a second, i discover it's ring/middle/index. been doing it that way without thinking since about 1998 when i played a lot of metal and the drummer played lots of double bass and blast beats.

3 finger gallop, just tried it. Can only do it semi smoothly on the E string.
Just added that technique to my practice routine.

Now I'm gonna go to the "Hardware, Set Up & Repair" forum on this site and see if anybody
can enlighten me on how to turn one of my beater Squiers into a priceless Fender road worn masterpiece...lol

Thanks for all the replies. It took a few hours of feeling odd (35 years of playing otherwise will do that to you), but it feels a lot better.
