I can only see it working for players who play with their thumb and want to grip their fingers round this thing.

My '74 Precision has it above the E which they did for a while in the 70s. Most of the rest of the fenders have it below or MIA.
In the '60s there were a bunch of basses that had them both above and below the strings. Never seen that on a Fender, tho.
I've seen a lot of mostly Precision basses with a thumb rest bolted below the G string. Why was this added? I can only see it working for players who play with their thumb and want to grip their fingers round this thing.
Any ideas?
I put one on my MiM 2002 P to give it some old school vibe...

Why not just use one of the covers?
