Thumb rest on wrong side?

Yeah, you know what I mean, probably someone think this is a stupid question, that one's on me, I still dont get it, why on earth are some basses equipped with the humbrest below the strings???

It's actually called a Tug Bar. They were put there when the bass was first invented because players would strum the strings with their thumb and anchor their fingers on the Tug Bar.

I always thought that too.


I am surprised more people don't monkey around with different thumb rest combinations. I know some people who will not buy certain basses because of the pickup/thumb placement.

James Jamerson used to do it a lot. I guess when he wanted to give "The Hook" a rest.

I've also seen Sting do it on some songs.

I suppose there are plenty more, but I can't think of any right now.

I'd always thought about that too...

And also I wouldn't buy bass with the pickups in a place where it doesn't feel right playing it. ( This doesn't amount to a lot of basses though)
