Thumb rest question?

I have just put an ashton acoustic bass on laybuy and should get it next week if all goes well and while i was playing it today in the store decided to put a thumb rest on it because i guess im just to used to resting it on the pup or E string. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas with this. Even if i had to make my own little rest and use some sort of miniture clamping system to hold it in the sound hole? Any help would be appreciated

And one more thing this might seem like a sily question but Y are most thumb rests like on fenders under the strings and not on the top??? I just cant see how this would work...

I can't answer your first question, But as to why the rest is below the strings, Originally bass was intended to be played with thumbs, so you'd clab grip onto the finger rest, and play with your thumb, but eventually people started playing with fingers, and they moved it

Actually, you could probably just use some double-sided tape, or superglue

If I'm understanding correctly, your question is about mounting a thumb rest to your new bass? If so... this was something I did with my Rob Allen bass. Piece of cake, really. Measure carefully, scuff the surface & bottom of the thumb rest, and then glue in place. I used hand pressure for clamping, and haven't had a single issue.

In your case, I'd guess the hardest part might be in sourcing the rest itself. I went directly to Rob Allen, but hopefully some of the luthiers here will have some advice.

Thanks for the advice everyone. This was resolved quickly and for the rest i should be able to make one myself. Would Queensland Maple be an alright rest, if it was stained a nice dark colour to almost match the top? This is a pic of it>>>

I just put a homemade thumb rest on my steinberger xl. I went to Lowe's and bought a 1/2 inch and 5/8 diameter dowels. They come in 4 or 5 feet long pieces. I used the 1/2 inch size. I cut it to size then painted black. Bought some double sided taped and put it on. I then took a black sharpie and colored any visible white showing from the tape. I super glued a previous thumb rest on a different steinberger but that was a mistake. It hurt my resale because when I removed it it left a little bit of a mess.

LOL whenever someone from america mentions Lowes and hardware like that i laugh because down under Lowes is a mens clothes store... But i had an idea of using a clamp like system that would clamp into the sound hole so if i ever needed to remove it there would be no damage of sticky residue. Thanks for the help though guys.
