i c.. but where can i get a plastic piece from? music shop or a normal hardware store? and where would u get the "some type of double sided tape" from?

thumbrest for jazz bass

Just screw it down. What's two small holes? You could easily cover them up with a different pick guard and an ashtray or fill the holes with wood putty and touch it up with nail polish if you wanted to sell it.
I've just finished making one very similar to this for a Squier VMJ, but a lot longer.
It runs from the 20th fret to 11/2" behind the Bridge PUP, made from two pieces of wooden dowel glued together and notched over the PUPs. It's held in place by two small countersunk screws from the underside of the PG. I have reference notches (7) on the upper corner cut with a half round file so I can always get to the same spots without looking.
At the minute it have a couple of coats of black woodstain and then clearcoat gloss varnish in the hope that it will look like Ebony when finished
Well, this is what I have done in the past, and still use. I have a chrome pickup cover that I have mounted as far back to the bridge as I could while still covering the the neck pickup, but just barely. It is wide enough so as to as to cover the pickup and look cool, and makes a really comfortable place to rest your thumb and reach that 'sweet spot'.

is it a Square piece of dowel u used?? cause i want it low profile not the fat huge thumbrests. i was gunna make it level to the pickups that sticks out and prob cut out the pick guard like in timmys commerfords bass i want it like that and hav the similar jazz bass as him

It appears the only reason his PG is cut is that there was some experimenting with pups on his bass.
Aside from the visual change, why do this? Even if your bass looks like his, you won't sound like him. Not even if you wear a white tank top.

i've used it to attach a couple of different designs of thumbrests on different basses
just use very little, maybe like 3 little dots, press it in place for like 5 seconds, & it's set
if you want to remove it, just give the thumbrest a sharp blow with a plastic mallet & it pops right off, with no residue or harm to the finish

If you use a long piece of plastic like on that SX above, you could glue it to the pickup covers; they're screwed in and as far as permanence goes, you could just buy new pickup covers if you wanted to sell. Under 10 bucks, no permanent holes.

for all you guys that want the long thumbrest that goes from pup to pup, you could just get a long piece of plastic or wood, and then glue TO THE PICKUPS AND NOT THE BASS. that way you dont get holes in your bass. you could also just use double sided tape to attatch the thumbrest to the pickups (which you could get at ace hardware or rite aid even) if you dont want to ruin the plastic pup covers. which are ACTUALLY replaceable if you didnt know.
I've been messing around with making some thumbrests for both Ps and Js. I get a piece of scrap wood from the home depot trace the upper bit of the pickguard onto it cut it rough with a jigsaw and then sand it to shape with my dremel, trace the pickguards drill holes to it and put em in there. I stain it and it ends up looking pretty good, plus no new holes. Probably takes me 2 1/2 hours and I have no clue what I'm doing with woodworking. I'll get a pic up in a bit.

Sorry for being late in getting back to you. Yes it is square dowell (8mm). the bridge pickup is notched 5mm and the neck pickup notched to suit, in order that the rest itself is paralel to the E string.
well what i did.. i live in Canada, OBV. In Hamilton, Ontario. what i did was went to P.A. Plactics and got 3inch and 3/4 plactic and 1/4 thick cut it in half so i would hav 2( makes it easyer incase one breaks. mde a notch 1/8 i think . im not sure but i did a sketchy cut . and drilled 2 holes on the un notched side so it would rest on the pickguard so i wouldnt hav to drill it and countersink the screw hole and used i think 1" or aleast 1" 1/4 long screw and 1/8 big and the head size was like 7/32 . costed me 6 bucks plus some extre plastic they gav me so yeeee.... i got it on my site... i used like a dremel and a drill n bits. not hard. quite easy if u guys were wondering......HAV FUN WIT THIS PROJECT.
