thumbrest?

i have been looking at fender p-basses for a while know and i have to wonder though whats with the thumbrest below the g-string? wouldnt it make more since to put it above the e-string?

It was the original S-1 switch. Most everybody hated 'em though so Fender stopped making 'em for years. Then they put the switch back in on the volume knob.
