Thunderbird Club Pt 6

Just got this back from the shop about a week ago. Mid-90's Epi NR Tbird formerly in sunburst. The previous finish had huge chunks out of it and major dents. Had it refinished in bright white and had a black pearl pickguard made for it. I had already installed a Dimarzio Model P pickup and added an ABM type bridge. Need to switch out the knobs with some refelector top knobs and it will be finished. Plays and sounds great :bassist:

That is totally badass Andy!

Wish my back yard had so few weeds too :D

Could i get a number please:D
My pics must have been to small lol :ninja:

~Jon

I've never owned a Thunderbird and always wanted one so when the classic IV came out with the neck-through/Gibson TB+ PU and in white, I couldn't resist :bassist:

Although I'm having a vol output issue (go figure on my first bird)
I still love it and the build quality can't be beat at this price point.

Once I get this issue solved, I can't wait to blaze it's thunder at a gig. May i please have a number? :D

~Jon

+1 on that!

It's a really amazing looking bass :)

Did you refin it yourself or was it done at a shop?

Thanks! I stripped it with the intention of doing the refin myself, but work and school got in the way so I took it to a local guy.

The color scheme was inspired by one of the Cataldo builds a while back. :D

Didn't mean to bump your pictures down JonDark!!

Hey Jon,

Sometimes I don't know if folks are just showing us their lovely new Thunderbird, or wanting a number, or both.
Regardless, welcome here, you're #378, it's beautiful new Epi, hopefully it's volume control issue is short-lived. :bassist:

Thank you very much! I LOVE this Bird, such a great feel and tone. And I'm blown away at the quality. I'm def hooked. I don't know why it took me 25 years to finally buy one. Although I may change the hardware out for chrome and some chrome covered Thunderbuckers down the road to go for a more vintage look and tone. Put the TB+ in a Epi pro IV project I have in mine for a modern tone.

I did figure out the vol issue though, a bad pot.

Thanks the the number, I figured it was missed when i asked for the number in the first post. Great club to be in, so many fantastic birds to drool over.
~Jon

Just wanting to say how much I love my T-bird. The last two gigs I did, I had to use my 5 string (subbing gigs), and all though I like my 5 string (Fender American Deluxe), I sure was missing my T-bird. For me it is perfect, weight, feel, tone. The next gig is back to my regular band and back to my T-bird!!

Hi,

I have a question for you, I've been wanting to ask for a while:

I'm seriously considering painting an Epi Goth in gun metal grey or similar, and remember seeing a while back, that you've actually modded an Epi Goth in a cool looking greyish colour - Would you care to elaborate on what colour you used, and whether you stripped it first, or you keept the original paint under the new layer?

Michael

Sure. The paint was Duplicolor Gun Metal Gray in the rattlecans. I did not strip the finish on the Goth. I sanded it and used it as a primer coat. I also used a filler primer on top of that because of the repairs and dents I was covering up, but I don't think a second primer is needed in the case of using the original flat black as the primer. Does anyone else know the answer to that??

I've got a few more questions for you - On the pictures on your Photobucket profile I noticed a few things about your Goth:

You've kept the neck shining black - Did you put a glossy clear coat on it, or did you just rub it with wax to get that shine?

Did you use Bondo or some other filler, to fill out the old jack hole and other dents?

And what kind of PU did you use - It seems that you routed the original PU holes slightly bigger?

My own plans for my Goth is to defret the neck myself (there are some really good videos about this on YouTube), and would also like to remove the old dots on the side, and replace these with new ones, where the frets used to be, and maybe dye the fretboard black.

Colourwise I'm torn between going gun metal grey or plain ebony (like the limited edition T-bird), and maybe swap all the hardware for chrome - keeping the original PU's but modifying them with chrome covers and PU rings, add a barrel jack on the side, and add a toggle selector in place of the original output jack.

So any advice or tip are most welcome...

Michael

Here is a link to a different forum with a description of the project. It will answer most of your questions.

As for the neck finish, I did use metallic black and then a clear coat on the headstock. I'm not sure really how the back of the neck got so shiny, but this is what I did. I had covered the neck with blue painters tape so when I redid the headstock there wouldn't be overspray on it. The tape was on the neck for quite a while, so when I removed it there was sticky residue all over the neck. I used naptha to remove the goo and when I was finished the neck was slick and shiny. I have used naptha to clean another Goth and it didn't make the body shiny, just left the satin finish like normal. I think someone on here removed the satin finish from their Goth (Andii Syks maybe??) so they can probably offer you advice if you wanted to shine your finish.

Yes indidly! I removed the satin finish from the neck only. If you play it long enough after your hands start sweating like a dog, that will help. I did that and also used guitar polish and a wool pad. I don't know what grade it was, all i can say it was green. It took a while, but i managed to get the glossy looking flat black finish on the neck. I was planing to do the same for the body, but i figured; "meh, i'll be playing this a long time so my sweat will do the job :) "

Good luck

Thanks a lot Andy!!!

Your link was really interesting to read, and basically answered all my questions... :)

Your modded Goth really looks stunning with that grey and black colour scheme! :)
