Chrome would be cool. IF i were epiphone i'd offer these models for the thunderbird:

Standard: post 88 gibson design. As is now, with more color option and optional switch from black hardware to chrome. along with pickup covers

Deluxe: Based off the 70's Bi-Centenial model. Only chrome hardware and pickups. Options would feature Distinct colours and optional from big or small tuners

Custom: Based off the 60's production model. Chrome hardware, optional colours, big or small tuners. Bridge and tail piece combination or traditional three point. Option of having the IV model or II model. So two pickup version or single pickup.

Non reverse: offer as reproduction of the 60's gibson model. Custom order only.

My two cents on what epiphone should do ;)

Black pickguard on a natural burst for a change - still not sure whether it's better than the original white. :hmm:

They labeled it "Limited Edition", but I'm not sure if that's not simply some marketing ploy. ;) I bought this bass used and paid more than the price for a new one, but I just didn't want the vintage sunburst finish.

My other 'Bird has a finish called "Ebony Stain", which is basically a very dark brown - I need to post that one again. :hyper:

Those are both finishes that were not made in great quantity. I wanted a Natural Burst at one point, they had already disco'd it so I ended up getting a natural instead.
Love to see a shot of the Ebony Stain!

Look who just got back from the mod shop! Now pondering if I should get one of those metal pickguards that float around ebay every now and then.

For anyone interested in installing one of these, be aware than a Kahler bridge will not fully cover the holes left behind from your 3-point bridge! I don't have a problem with them for now but if I ever pull it apart for a refinish then I'll probably fill them up.

Also, my luthiers shop is pretty smokey... any tips on getting the cigarette smell out of my bass and gig bag? I live in Hong Kong so I'm not really comfortable sitting it by an open window (severe humidity).

Was the installation difficult? What did it entail?
I'd love to do this mod to my Epi Fenderbird :)

I'd happily trade my natural burst for a white one. :bassist:

The ebony stain finish looks like a standard ebony in most situations:

It's only in the right light that you can see the color. At one point I put a yellow pickguard on it to make the brown stand out more. I'll try to get a photo in bright sunlight, but there's not much of that to be found at the moment here... :rollno:

I'm really jumping the gun here, but I'm doing my homework ahead of time just in case.
On a related note:

Has anyone compared the Lull to Thunderbuckers?

I hear the EMG's are sort of a drop in replacement as well? Is that 40 series or 35 series? I've got a few sets of 40's sitting at home so that might be a first route I take if I don't like the stock pickups. I'll give them a solid shot first, but I wasn't crazy about the Birds' that I've played in stores.

And...if I decide to swap pickups with anything chrome, then I'd need to swap out the rest of the hardware as well. I'm looking for some pics of Vintage Sunburst birds with chrome HW now...

Lulls and Thunderbucker are both based on '60 vintage Gibson pups, Mike's are wound to early '60 spec - 8 and 9k. Based on a pair of deconstructed ones from an original '63. His are wound to that spec by TV Jones and some are produced by Seymour Duncan, available in Chrome, Polished Nickel, Raw Nickel, Black and Gold with rings to match. Thunderbuckers are done to several different specs, i.e some later '60s Gibson pups were overwound and hotter but again, are faithful replicas - Gibson's QC on pups was a bit erratic back then so there was lots of variation. Either choice would be far, far better than EMG!
Somewhere in Pt 3 or 4 there's a shot of one guy's S/B finish that he chromed out with Thunderbuckers, a new 3 point and either Hipshot or Resolite tuners....
Chrome is an expensive addiction, here's my White '89 re done with Lull's and Hipshots.
