Thunderbird Club Pt 6

Great amp!! I just bought a Hartke LH1000 and man, my Gibby T-bird just really sings through that amp. Gives me the sound I really want with my T-bird.
Nice!! I really dig the dual pre-amp, it has a separate tube and ss pre-amp, which you can use at the same time, so I mainly use the tube but with a little bit of ss to get a bit more definition :D

yeh im due some new strings, was thinking of going for flats.. will let you know how it sounds!
Cool, I know how they sound, got flats on my epi for a few months now, absolutely no regrets there!! I don't know if you can get them where you live, but I've got Galli Jazz Flat chromes on mine :)

Why do you guys think that it's pretty uncommon to see Thunderbirds around, especially in rock, yet you see Fenders EVERYWHERE? Is it simply a Microsoft Windows vs. Mac thing, or some other reason?

For normal people, I'd imagine it is price and people may still shun Epiphone. For major artists it still could have started as price as their favorites might be what they grew up with or could be the money can throw at artists to show off Fenders.

Hi everyone.
I've joined TB forums just because of the T-Bird Club.

I had an epiphany about four days ago... the first time had a T-Bird hanging below my belly: "this is my bass from now on!".
So give me a number :D

My Epi T-Bird made in Korea with EMG 35 DCs is - I hope - just the first in a long line of T-Birds (Jackson Kelly Bird, ESP LTD Phoenix and several other Epis with various pickup and electronics configurations). I've just restrung it and tuned it to BEAD.
I can hardly wait for the next rehearsal to hear it cranked up.

Just another shot of my lefty.

It looks great, it seems you're enjoying it. Nice to see Gibson do something for left handed players - finally.
It would be interesting to know your thoughts about the bass since it's your first 'Bird. :)

It seems this was short-lived. I heard that production on the lefty Thunderbirds has already been discontinued. Too bad.

I'm enjoying it. Sexy as hell, but definitely still taking getting used to. I'm still able to play my Carvin more smoothly, but the feel of the two is totally different. The Thunderbird sounds so good. I'm running it through a Darkglass B3K overdrive pedal. I've thought of replacing the bridge with a Hipshot Supertone, simply because I prefer a narrower string spacing, but I don't think it's worth it. What will be really telling for all I'm experiencing with it is when I play with a band. I still have yet to play it with anyone else, since my last band ended right when I got it. Something new should be happening soon, as soon as this guitarist/singer and I can find a drummer. I see playing with a band as getting thrown into the deep end. Sink or swim. I'm looking forward to it. And assuming Mono Cases does indeed put out a modified Vertigo around the Fall that will fit the Thunderbird, I'll be thrilled. My Ritter terrifies me.

Question for you T-Bird folks:

How do you find the ergonomics when playing seated with the bass on your knee (if you ever do this)? I ordered a drop dead gorgeous Lull T-Bird before I had ever played one (it's the new sonic blue/maple one on the Bass Central site) and while I was waiting I had a chance to try a used black one. The tone of Mike's T-pup is the best I have ever heard, but I usually play seated without a strap (bad shoulder) when not on a gig, and not having an upper body edge to rest my plucking hand forearm on was very uncomfortable to me. It was so bad that I have not taken delivery of the blue 'bird and it's currently a new consignment at Bass Central. Looking at it and knowing how superb it sounds makes me want to try again. Any thoughts/perspectives appreciated.

Will a strap help while sitting?
How about the non-reverse model? Same build different shape. Should sound about the same, no?

That's really too bad, I can't see a solution for you. Your expierience is the opposite of mine as I'm quite comfy seated while practicing. Mike does offer the T bird pup in both Jazz and P style basses, that might be the best option.
BTW I completely agree with you about Mike's pickup, it is the best - that's why I'm an endorser. :)

Yeah-I may just have to take delivery and give it another go. The thick punch of those pups was thoroughly satisfying, and the bass is a beauty!

I stuffed an East MMSR 2-band preamp in my NRTB5 yesterday... it's night-and-day difference in the tone of the thing. I thought it was good before, but it kills now! The new control arrangement is volume, treble boost/cut, and bass boost/cut. I had to drill for an end-mounted jack to make room for the added control pot.

I kept my parallel/single/series blade switch, even though it was recommended that I ditch it. I'm glad I didn't listen... it adds an entirely different dimension to the tones on-tap.

"Before" pic of the whole bass, for those not familiar with the build. I'll shoot new pics soon with the extra knob.

Hi, I've just bought into the Thunderbird bass guitar.
I bought a PRO IV Epi with the Gibson pickups.
I run it through an Ashdown Mag 300 EVO head and have to plug it into the active input as opposed to passive as the pickups are so powerful.
Had it set up with Rotosound swing bass strings and very happy with it.
Got covered in sweat at it's first gig last week!
