Already have a number but thought I'd add a new pic of my Epi Tbrid Goth modded with Lollar 60' repo pups and TBR rings. I always thought the Epi Goth was mahogany body but my luthier discovered it's actually laminated. Still love this bass and sounds amazing.

I actually saw something about this on Facebook. The "mahogany" Gibson uses isn't all they say it is.

A customer took their Gibson Firebird to a local luthier to have a carving put on the front. Upon carving into the 'bird, he found a thin veneer of mahogany on a spruce core.

Gibson hasn't used 'real' mahogany for decades. Otherwise they would specify that they use 'Genuine' or Honduras mahogany which is the real stuff, not the African species they use. Warmoth doesn't use the real stuff either.

A genuine mahogany unfinished Thunderbird style body costs more than an entire Epi TBird.

Laminated?? I have a goth also, this is mind blowing. But what is laminated?

Laminated means basically plywood: multiple layers of very thin wood, glued together. Pretty much looked down on as a body wood, but very strong, stronger than a solid piece of wood. You're likely standing on a piece of "laminate" (plywood) right now, under the carpet or tile. Plywood is used for floors, among other things, due to its high strength/low cost. On an instrument, the plywood is simply a bit thicker.

Actually, any instrument using any sort of "veneer" fits into this category, as there are now 2, or more than 2, layers glued to a core.

...and speaking of strength, observe a Gibson Tbird bass, or others, using a long thin neck. If they are well engineered, the manufacturer designs "multi'lam" necks...bonding mahogany, maple, walnut, and/or others, to achieve high strength with low mass, and to help guard against broken headstocks. Really nothing wrong with that, it's a selling feature. And looks cool, with stripes running the length of the neck. Another form of "plywood".

While working on my Goth project I found that the raised section in the middle of the body was a white wood, but the wood underneath was a reddish wood which I'm assuming is the "mahogany" that Epi claims it uses. It produced red saw dust when I routed out the pickup cavities and drilled the new input jack location, but I know it's not a high grade of real mahogany. I just assume it's a low cost wood that falls loosely into the mahogany species. Like Carlos said, if it was genuine mahogany the Epi's would cost much more than $300.

This is one kickass bass - love it :hyper:

Hey guys, I've ordered an Epi T-Bird Pro IV in the vintage burst as a christmas present to myself, so can I reserve a number please? :hyper:

Pics to come as soon as she arrives!!

:p

I see...... You've confessed your GAS and admitted it - and paid your money. Welcome to the club aussiebasshero! You are #190, please share pics with us soon :bassist:

Add me to the club!

Been wanting to learn bass since I was 17, so seven weeks at age 48 I bought my first bass - an Epi Tbird factory refirb. No idea about strings; seems to be the stock passive pickups.

I have never played an instrument before, and I travel for work so my 'lessons' are youtube in motel rooms.

Picked up a B90 Hartke for a 100 bucks, and off we go...

Got to play with live humans last weekend - one of my best friends is a lifetime musician (and thankfully patient). What a blast! I am trying to figure out what I am supposed to be doing during guitar chords etc. My ear is profoundly untrained and my sense of rhythm is undeveloped, but getting better.

Suggestions welcome!

I don't remember the last time I posted in this forum, but I was doing some googling and thought I'd ask a question.

Number one, I really like all the chrome on the red one, looks really sharp. Also, where did you get the "opti-grab" on there? Did you just chrome the black one that it came on?

The reason I'm asking is I'm planning on getting an epi tbird and making a Sixx tribute bass based on his vintage burst one with the black bottom wing.

And since it's mine and I felt it didn't have enough chrome on it.

And while I'm here, here's my current only tbird:

in addition to the diamond plate pickguard and stainless TR cover, put some Gotoh tuners, fender-style jack, aguilar 2 band preamp, Bartolini Pickups, and my favorite, a kahler trem!

I'm thinking about switching the Barts for EMGs, so if anyone wants to trade or buy the Barts, let me know.

And here it is in action

Okay so....I had resigned my membership, as I ended up selling my Epiphone Elite Thunderbird a few months back. For whatever reason I was having a hard time getting the sound I wanted out of it, whereas my Fenders always sounded great. I missed it once it was gone, of course, but...like I said, I couldn't justify keeping it around when my P and J Basses were doing it for me.

Well, as of this past weekend I've decided to give the Thunderbird another shot. I was at Music Go Round and spotted a white Epiphone Thunderbird. This was one of the recent ones with the nickel or chrome hardware. From a purely cosmetic point of view, I HATE the black pickups and hardware on most Thunderbirds. Anyway....I plugged it in, played it, and....lo and behold, it sounded AWESOME. I was playing it through a Tech 21 Landmark head and a no-name 4x10 cab. I couldn't stop thinking about how much I wanted to get it home and put it through my 800RB and 8x10 cab. The fact that it has a bolt-on neck was appealing to me as well, as I'm planning on eventually going the "Fenderbird" route and putting a Precision neck on the body. At $240, I couldn't pass it up.

It's on layaway, and I'll be going back to pick it up after the holidays. Merry Xmas to me.

Wow! $240.00 for a sweet white 'Bird - awesome deal! And glad your back in the Thunderbird fold........Still #119 too!

Dig the 'Bird with a Kahler! Very cool :hyper:
Welcome here and thanks for the great post, you're #192!

The Red 'Bird is a Nikki Sixx MkII, it comes stock with black hardware including the Opti Grab. I replaced all the hardware with chrome parts from Hipshot, Mike Lull and that ebay guy that does the cool PGs - Some of the orginal Gibson parts including the Opti Grab were stripped and chromed, I'm stupid crazy for chrome, this cost a lot of $$$, beware!

And we're at 1000 posts :hyper:

I'll have a mod close this thread and start a new one - Thanks everyone, here's to the next 1000!
