I want the matte black finish on my goth bird to become pic #1 so it doesn't look like pic #2 anymore. In other words, I want my goth bird to have a shiny flatblack finish rather than a dull flat black finish. So, I was wondering, besides years of playing it as a solution, Could i use steel wool on it to shine it out a bit?

Pictures aren't of my bird it's only reference of what i want mine to resemble (Colour wise only xd)

Question for now though; Anybody fitted a tremolo to their tbirds? How do they sit in relation to the three-post bridge and their holes? I'm considering a Kahler to be specific.

I wouldn't use steel wool. You can probably use some polishing compound and a buffer (or by hand if you feel like getting a workout) Essentially thats the same effect years of playing will achieve.

Guitar Polish will take it from flat to matte pretty easily. Combining that with 0000 steel wool can work too.

The Orville is one incredible sounding and playing bass to be honest.Been running it through the paces at rehearsal and the bandmates have all commented on what a great sounding bass it is.I'm taking the Orville and my 68 Precision into the studio starting 2nd week of May so it will be tracked on an upcoming vinyl album.On another note I haven't even set the Orville up or changed the strings.It played so well on delivery I've left it as is.Not sure what the strings are as I usually replace immediately with Rotosounds but right out of the box it felt great and the strings fit the bass well.I basically cleaned it up,wiped down the strings,tuned it and have been playing it that way since.I'll shoot some pics one of these days.Also ordered a NOS Gibson Thunderbird truss rod cover.Never even looked to see if it was a direct replacement on the Orville.It's not unless I want to drill new mounting holes so I left the Orville cover on.No big deal.

Let me know if you want to sell that Orville TRC! Mine has a Gibson one and I'd love to change it back to original!

Be sure not to go through the finish! Ive only ever used steel wool to flatten a finish and make it look matte, so im not sure thats the way to go (like the neck of the defretted ESP F200 in my albums).

Personally, I would drop the $30 on the Ryobi RB101 buffer and use that with the compound to shine it up. If you are going to go the wool route, use bronze wool so your pickups dont attract all the little pieces that come off. Good luck!

Still awaiting the Goth Pickguard, but other than that, my TBird is complete! The I switched it from J/P to P/J and I like the sound so much better! Here are some pics of one of the strap screws and the neon strings under the black light:

How many times per day should i do it to achieve that matte finish easily? Roughly

Polish alone might do it, it basically acts like the oils that are on your hands and will take flat to matte very quickly, usually with one application.

It takes a LOT of effort to cut through finish with 0000 steel wool, its main use is specifically for furniture finishes. Yes, it will be attracted to pickup magnets. Instead of steel wool you can use 3M scotch brite pads, green is very mild, red cuts a lot quicker.

DO NOT use bronze wool it is much too coarse

Ive been getting a few PM's about the Thunderbird strap buttons, so heres some more info on them.

The Allparts website calls them both strap locks and strap buttons. They are strap buttons. I was a bit confused when I got them because they screwed in instead of sliding/popping on like Invalid Link Removed. If youre not expecting locks, then they are a cool strap button upgrade that are better than the stock buttons.

Why did I switch to the other button for pictures? The screw was stuck! It kept turning the button and felt instead of just unscrewing the bird!

My strap hole is pretty big, but the wings and tail catch on to the strap

While they dont "lock" the strap like straplocks do, they will keep your strap from sliding off. Id trust them enough to do this
