I was a Ray player for quite a while, and I can see where a VP with SS strings, bridge pup soloed and tone turned down could sound similar to a modern 3 band single pup Ray with nickel strings. The Ray is more zing happy than the VP but roll off that top end and use warm strings and it gets plenty of low mid thump just like the VP.
She was a bit past my time, but she was the queen of SoCal for years.
It may be down to how I have my Ray set. One thing about the SRs I love is the eq gives you a lot of range. The way I have mine set seems to be very similar to my VP.
I have a SBMM Ray4. Nice bass for the price. But I find myself tweaking the eq and amp settings to sound like my Thunderbirds so I rarely bother to play it. And it’s nowhere near as comfortable to play as the Tbirds.

My PreEB Ray rarely gets played these days. It sounds wonderful, but OMG is it heavy! Beyond boat anchor territory.

The new tube lava lamp base. Just remove the safety cage and replace with an inverted metal funnel and there you go...'Course it'd need 2 switches: on/off and standby.
Could use this base as an amp in a pinch.
