Thunderbird Club

Same pickup spacing as all the modern Thunderbirds?
I haven't measured, but all indications point to the new NR as having the same spacing as the modern Thunderbirds. Pickups are farther apart. Likely used the same routing plot points in the program. From a manufacturing stand point that kind of makes sense. But wouldn't seem to have been much trouble to reprogram for those runs. I'm sure other aspects had to be re-entered. But that may have just been the plan.

I know how much you want vintage pickup placement, but isn't all this anecdotal because the pickups we're dealing with are apples and oranges? Do we have any comparisons with the same pickup and relatively same bass?

Neither of those basses would work very well for me. Not only do they have no controls, they don’t even have any strings! What a goofy design. :rollno:
Also noticed you don’t show the headstocks, I assume it’s because they’ve already fallen off.
Not to worry, you can get NRs with all the extras you mention. But don't get one with feet. I hear they stink.

I like the new marketing campaign….

They are different, though I'm not sure how purely anecdotal it really is given that moving any pickup closer to the neck will remove some tightness and add some depth or bass (mud in some cases), just like moving any toward the bridge will make it tighter and kind of brighter (as in the early 70s Jazz bridge pickup placement). There maybe pickups where this isn't true, but none that I have encountered. Unless a pickup is designed to counter that movement, which does not seem to be the case here. All this is a personal preference. Fortunately I've found strings that work on the NR and the '06.

And as I've mentioned before, I am also curious about the thinking behind moving things from what was/is considered the gold standard position and was part of the equation of putting Thunderbirds on the musical map in the first place. Which we will never know about. Shoot, maybe I'll write Gibson and might get a reply solving that personal conundrum! I'm me, and how people think and "get there" is always fascinating. I know it makes no sense to anyone but me and I claim no sense of being normal in this.

Apparently the Epi 2013 is the only test for spacing impact, but thats with the TB+ units. Buying one for that purpose is an expensive test, however. I wish I knew someone close by who had one to do some recording and testing.

Please remind me where we saw that the 2013 CP has different pickup spacing. I did a Google search for "2013 epiphone thunderbird classic pro" and everything there looks just like every other CP and modern Gibson.

I'd also love to know why Gibson changed the spacing. Maybe they thought the TB+ sounded better that way? I guess we'll never know unless we find out from Gibson.

Someone has a 2013 and posted the measurements. I posted my 2014.

It's not so apparent at first Ken.
But that 2013 CP neck pick is slightly closer to the bridge.
I don't know the measurement exactly.
But there's gotta be someone here that does.

A quote from me…..

here's how pickup placement is decided....

Line Manager: I dunno just make holes to make whatever these things are, fit in it..... don't forget to make two holes!

Apprentice woodworker: ok...

Line Manager: Why does this geetar only have 4 strings! SOMEONE IS GETTING FIRED!
