It actually is more serious than it sounds as in the past panicking cyclists have been killed and injured after smashing while trying to avoid Magpies. (probably not as focused as these riders would be though?)
From personal experience, it is a frightening thing when they come after you. Evidently Australia’s magpies are the only ones in the world that attack. A distinct species evidently. They are lovely birds though, for about 10 months of the year.
I think the course was laid out by the Aunty Jack writers. The finish line is alongside a sign warning of the birds and telling cyclists to dismount and do not ride in the park. That’s a little funny.
“A fairly large bird came very close [during a training ride] and it just kept following me,” Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel, a favourite for the elite men’s road race this weekend, told CyclingNews. “It was terrifying. But that’s Australia, apparently. I hope it’s the only time it happens, but I am afraid of it.”
A lot of exaggeration goes on about our dangerous animals. But I reckon, for urban dwellers anyway, the Magpies are probably the biggest nuisance.
Magpie Alert, a website that monitors magpie attacks in Australia, currently lists over 1,500 incidents so far this year, causing almost 200 injuries.
