Thunderbird Club

My cheap Chinese basswood bass, that I upgraded with SDQP pickups and La Bella tapes came in at about 6.5#. On a sound per pound basis, it was a nice axe.

Exactly - and this is the thing... judge any bass with your ears - not your eyes or presumptions about weight.

Yikes - that's heavy!

Beautiful though.......

He (Reid) is a dyed in the wool G&L guy. (mufti-instrumentalist/guitarist.., but owns an '80s G&L L1000 bass along with the green CBL)

Here's his custom maple 12'r I gilded for him, final finished by Pat Wilkins. G&L pu's/electronics. (also very heavy) Heavy is good for sustain and so his 12'r = chimey/ringing notes/chords. Not discounting a heavy basses pluses - just saying a light bass can also sound rich and deep/full. As is generally the case - the heaviest basses are also the ones most prone to actual neck dive. At first you'd go... what? but this is only due to poor design. A well designed bass could be extremely heavy - but it won't neck-dive.

Did you get both for 130 bucks? Deal of the century if you did.
There's a guy out here with K horns, he powers it with about a 100 watt SS power amp and a preamp with no tone controls, very clear. I would have liked to have heard it with some nice McIntosh tube amps. I had an MC-30 years ago, best sounding power amp I've ever heard.
I still have a Dynaco preamp, it needs the rectifier replaced though like all of them though. I had a few Stereo-70's years ago and a MkIII (60 watt KT88 model?), more stupid sales.
I wish, no, just the tubeless, cabinetless PAS…

That would look awesome! Love the black neck and hardware with the white body and goth pickguard.
If you have the standard Epiphone goth pickups I’d suggest you try a .022 tone cap in place of the Goth tone cap. It really makes the bass a screamer and completely ended my desire to upgrade the pickups. I’d also highly suggest the Hipshot bridge in place of the stock Goth three point bridge. It will give you the ability to adjust your action to match the Aerodyne neck radius (the three point won’t do that). Final comment, the Epiphone Goth paint is THICK and a RPITA to remove. It might be worth it to have your finisher strip and repaint the body vs a DIY job.

Found a Supertone on the locals and tone cap ordered, both should be here next week, about the same time the other stuff shows up.
Toyed around with colors again, I love the white body, but leaving it as is is not too shabby either...

I've got a question for you guys. What do you think I should get: a thick gigbag, the Epiphone thunderbird case or a hardshell case for it? Is the Epiphone thunderbird case any good? I've read that the metal feet and the vinyl are weak spots of it. Also the locking mechanisms. Is any of this true?
I like cases personally. But there are a very few gig bags that are both good and will fit Thunderbirds. @BklynKen has and does used a gig bag and is satisfied with the protection. He's knows what he's doing, so if he says a certain GB works just fine, I believe him with no reservation, case preferences aside. I think it's the headstock angle what would always concern me. But all this depends on how careful or roughly it will be handled. A careful person not on tour will be able use them with great results. The opposite is less likely.

I had one like this that also came with my '06. It was good enough I would have used it. I believe Gator makes one as well.

Are they waterproof? In case it rains? I'm leaning more towards the Epiphone T-bird case, I saw a gator one, and the Epiphone one had better reviews than the Gator case.
If you get a good GB, you can spray some waterproofing treatment on it if you wanted, but unless you're in a downpour I doubt it would be necessary.

They both look great! You might want to consider how you’ll use it. If it will be a stage bass, and you normally wear darker clothes on stage then a white bird would be killer. If you’re going for the stealth look, then black works great.

Something else to keep in mind - the Goth body is satin black, no gloss. The Aerodyne neck is gloss black, no satin. If you decide to match the sheen on the two pieces to gloss then I’d recommend going all the way and painting the body white. Just my humble opinion, there is no wrong answer.
