Thunderbird Club

My Dad spent a little over two years there, always near the the front line. Some times he would watch the few programs about the war that wasn't a war and sometimes he didn't want to relive it I suppose. I think it reminded him of all the young men who never came home. That was something that always bothered him.
Your Dad is a hero. As are all of those here who served and their families.

My Dad was a Marine; a tank operator. He served his time, was discharged, started college, and then it started. He kept expecting to get called back up, but wasn’t. He lost some friends. He has always felt a sense of guilt. But he shouldn’t, given what he subsequently contributed to the satellite space program.

My dad was in the (brand new at the time) USAF in San Antonio, his younger brother was in the USMC in Korea, and his older half brother was a squid on a diesel attack sub during the Korean War.

The Marine brother went on to be an Oakland city policeman with a propensity for violence; I didn’t understand when I was a kid in the 60s, but I wonder if he suffered from PTSD.
Likely so. We’re still learning how to help soldiers deal with it. But everything moves slow.

Not that either of my bands has had the chance to play with RR, but I will recommend that we don’t if offered. We’re all originals anyway, so not likely to play with cover bands often anyway.

Winters is a LIFESAVER for those of us that NEED to play live. Funky PA, weird mix of bands, whatever, there needs to be more places like that, and more guys like CJ supporting all acts.

No question Rich - regardless of any musicians takeaway after playing there, to go out of their way to slag CJ & Corrine (who ARE Winters', as in real people - not an abstract "bar") two people who held on through Covid and ended up buying the property (needless to say now in major debt) through it all to keep it going. They had to give up their rental house and lived in the tiny green room upstairs during early Covid with their two young boys until they could get back on their feet financially.

Everyone in my bands has day-jobs so I don't expect money, but if the place is packed and alcohol is being sold - CJ/Corrine give us some money and I'm always thankful because I know what money means to them.

Okay, that’s what I was thinking. Yes I purchased from Dave probably 10 years ago?
and you never had anything done to it? whoever replaced the output tubes last chose the Electro Harmonix made in China types….wonder if those have been in there since the upgrade from 6146 to 6550s happened….if so, the upgrade is fairly recent since EH was not marketing tubes when the upgrade became popular….then again they may be a more recent replacement…we should take this off line and PM but did it start doing the popping (still haven’t heard it but sounds like you may have had a cell phone in close proximity) recently?….

Fender bass amps (especially tube) sound great, they've got the right recipe......what output tubes does yours use? How many?
Mine's been modded with an extra transformer for KT-120s- originally took 6550s and equivalents. It uses six tubes.
(I'm guessing it's looking toward pushing a rating of 400w now? Maybe you can set me straight on that, Chuck?)

That EB-2 has its original mudbucker and mud button. Mine never had a mud button and has a different pickup that's not as much of a speaker cone killer as an original mudbucker. That one is a little older and a little confusing. Does it have two pickups? If it does, it must be a '67, and it's really pristine looking.
Yes it has two pickups. It is beautiful. The neck is a little chunkier than my 68 EBO.

what a jackazz….FB can svck, that said, if he’s not paying the bands he could invest in a better PA but I guess the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach has worked for him so far…..like a double edged sword, I’ve heard more than one person slag that place for the same reasons….tweechy tweechy zone….

They did upgrade the stage monitors more recently but the main reason it's problematic is because the board is on stage instead of out in the room and there is no dedicated sound person. (one more employee to pay) So every band screws with the controls and cables are everywhere each time you show up to play. If there was a person to manage the PA - that would be a start to better sound. But also, it's not a big space and if bands didn't play so loud, the PA could handle it. We've dialed a decent sound because we deliberately play under the vocals volume-wise. I think people unreasonably expect a stadium quality PA in a small bar.

Well, for the second time now, I can’t catch @dukeorock Mark & The Eskimo Brothers. I was set to see them in Paso Robles tomorrow night. But, I was at the ER all day. It’s a lung issue, but thank god not an embolism. Likely related to the anesthesia from surgery last month. Anyway, can’t drive for awhile. And my son can’t drive me over.

Sorry Mark. Please come back. And have your booking agent get you into Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace in Bakersfield. You guys are better than a lot of bands that play there.
Dude...

Sounds like my kinda place actually.

A pair of quality powered speakers like QSC K10s for mains would be plenty for clear vocals in that room.

Bar bands- good ones- are my favorite night out, if I'm not playing. Haven't had a night out like that really since I lived in Miami. Some parts of my life I need to get back

I tried to find where it was that he did that. I’m clueless navigating Facebook. But from what I can see, they fill every weekend with live music. I’d like to meet them.

I get the feeling he is well aware of the problem and is working on a plan to budget for a new system, not just a band aid. But that won’t be cheap. Buy once, cry once.
