Thunderbird Club

trippy stuff…

Trippy indeed - I attended this concert of Huun Huur Tu at Fantasy Studio's in Berkeley in 2008 - in fact, you can see younger Geo (audience shot) at 6:17 sitting with my friend Reid. Through our friend Konstantine from Moscow (who helped organize the concert) we later got to hang with them and we all jammed at our rehearsal-space at the time. On another occasion at Avid (Protools) when it was in Daley City, I was fortunate enough to be allowed to sit quietly in the recording space with them while they recorded songs. Amazing in person, down-right other worldly - especially in such intimate proximity.

what Cataldo do you have? would like to try one….anything like a Lull?..

I bought this about a year and a half ago. It sounds fantastic but I am not sure which model Thunderbucker is installed. I don't think the pickup sounds quite as good as the Lull's, but it is great in its own right.

I have ThunderBuckers on one of my Gibsons, and also don’t know which model they are.
Does anyone know how to tell, or, have a description of which models there were and what the difference is supposed to be?

The model #’s are written on the back of the pick ups.
There’s a Sidewinder in the middle flanked by two ‘66 Thunderbuckers.
This bass just slams.
It’ll do a Ric, Precision…..
You name it, as good as if not “better”
then those original basses.
Just my opinion. :)

I remember there being a 63 model for neck and bridge. Also a 66 model for neck & bridge. Seems like there was a 66 version that was wound hotter (66S?) that Carlo recommended for single pickup basses. I need to check the output on mine.

Mine came with the 2001 Natural that I have and I have never needed to pull the pickups out, but my curiosity will get the better of me by my next string change and I’ll look. The original ad, when I bought it (local CL), stated what they were and something tells me they are ‘66’s. I’d say that are Fat sounding and a tad heavy on the lows compared to Lollars, and totally different than the Gibson re-issues.

I also have Novak and now Dunable D-Birds in other Gibson ‘birds, but the ‘bird with the Novak’s has flats on it and the one with the Dunable’s is fighting me to be set up well, super buzzy even after a new nut and fret level:banghead:. So I can’t compare those yet.

The website is gone as best I can tell. I printed out the descriptions several years ago, but of course can’t find them. I guess (god forbid) try a search or maybe you can try to contact @Dadagoboi. When we get the info, we need to save it to the Wiki.

Mona is visiting Seattle and you're not?

FWIW the weather here is grim - in a way that only Seattle can be, 35 degrees rain/snow for at least 8 days straight,
I went Regina, Saskatchewan for meetings this week. Arrived at 3am on Wednesday and it was -27C (-16F)o_O
Sure was nice to come back to the wet coast!

Your T-Bird is one of my favorites!

From the website:

The pickup family includes the Fender-ish bright 63, the more agressive sound of the 66 and the 66S (optimized for single pickup application). I also offer a 5 string modification that "stretches" the magnetic field across the wider span of the 5 string, but fits in the same can.
The 63 Series: 63 Neck and 63 Bridge. Replicated from early Gibson samples, these pickups are bright and growly, somewhat Fender-ish in tone. Customers report these shine for recording applications. The bridge pickup is more powerful than the neck pickup to get good balance. Specify pair or single neck or bridge pickup when ordering.
The 66 Series: 66 Neck and 66 Bridge. Replicated from later Gibson samples. These pickups have a nice balance between power and brightness, and have been our consistent best seller. Again, the bridge pickup is more powerful than the neck to maintain a sonic balance. Specify pair or single neck or bridge pickup when ordering.
The 66S Pickup: Optimized for single pickup applications. It has somewhat more power than a 66 Bridge, but maintains a good amount of brightness. I call it “pleasingly plump yet crunchy”.

Our pickups, fully assembled, are 3.65" x 1.59". Vintage Gibsons are approximately 3.63" x 1.56", so measure fit carefully for your application - there may be an interference in the width of the body rout
