Thunderbird Club

Through my Ampeg head and cab any bass with the neck pickup too close to the neck can sound "unthick." (The '06 Thunderbird and '55 Pbass, the former has been addressed and fixed.) A lot of bass, but something missing in the low mids. Lowering the bass on the head and boosting the mids doesn't fix it. Even lowered the neck pickup to see if that wold help. It's either somewhat boomy and indistinct, or too thin if much bass/boom is removed. And I love huge bass, but it has to be full and not just have lows and top-end clank. My issue is only in a big room. At home it sounds fantastic. As good as any bass I have in fact. In big rooms/live settings things sound very different, and that is the case with the NR. That said, the Ashdown did help and I'm hoping I can more more progress. I just have to find the right ingredients without spending much money.
I’m not going to suggest anything as you guys are much more advanced than I am.
That said I think a HPF is a “can’t hurt” type of addition.
I have probably said this before but I have a Tight Arse.

by Cave Passive Pedals. It is tiny and needs no power, but it is set at a preset level - which I can’t remember.
I bought it as insurance for my speakers, though I probably don’t need it.

On the amp EQ sliders, I don’t go for the “Smiley Face”. I use an “Elvis Sneer” pattern.

I love everything about that.

You have to sneak up on them so they don't have a chance to react ;)

My friend is a hard-core Trace fan and has a nice selection of heads and cabs. He is the reason I was looking for the head in my pic.

Someone posted this in a Trace group on FB. I am surprised his house is still standing!!

Wait until I’m done with the basement at the mountain. I have plans.

Can't like the post - really hate hearing long-term music stores closing. I understand it in this case, but it's still a blow. I love the vintage Burns of London he is playing and the Baldwin hanging behind him. On-line is killing these shops... progress? :rollno:
So there is really only one shop left in the other Country Music capital, Bakersfield. The owner, Artie, has an amazing collection of Bakersfield built Mosrites. And so many vintage amps it’s ridiculous. He has a hard time parting with anything. He has had health issues. I don’t know how long he can hang on. It will be a very sad day when Front Porch Music has to close. But it is inevitable. Time marches on.

You're not alone. I understand the concept - but it's just that when I hear "my tone" - I stop. Tweaking allows... "that's close, what if I do this..."
Yes. And if I don't hear my tone I feel compelled to tweak until I do. By my tone, I don't at all mean all my basses sound the same. But they all are big, fat, full and have some punch and not much treble, yet there is no mud.

Reminds me of the Silvertone amp i had. My first amp. I was 12. It soon went into the attic. I replaced it with the Fender Bassman 50 and 212 cab. But I loved that el cheapo Sears amp. I went looking for it some years ago, only to find that Dad tossed it. Mice had made it their home and he figured I wouldn’t want it. Oh well.

I may be in the market for one of those next year or the year after that.
They are nice. I didn't realize it at the time years ago, but much of my problem was the cabs I was using as much as anything. I was going through various heads and getting somewhat better results. Finally got cabs to my liking and the heads were not as much of an issue. Those and the SWR 350 I wouldn't mind having back with my current cabs. I've said before, I think cabs might contribute more to tone than the amps used. Exceptions do apply. And of course it's subjective.
