So, if you were looking for an active thunderbird, you would replace the pre-amp, not the pickups?
I'm not really a fan of onboard electronics. I own at least ten bass amps and combos. They have tone shaping covered for me, YMMV.
Tone starts with strings and pickups, I don't care what amp or pre you put after them. Garbage in, garbage out.
