So, if you were looking for an active thunderbird, you would replace the pre-amp, not the pickups?

I'm not really a fan of onboard electronics. I own at least ten bass amps and combos. They have tone shaping covered for me, YMMV.

Tone starts with strings and pickups, I don't care what amp or pre you put after them. Garbage in, garbage out.

new bass and first tbird. The almighty epiphone classic iv pro.
I love the look of the 3 point but not the mechanics of it so I'll probably replace it with a Babicz 3 point if I can hunt one down.

It's fair to say this club is the coolest on talk bass...

I don't. The Pro IV has a normal type bridge so the Cataldo just mounts to the body.

For my '77 (and any later TBird with a 3 point) I came up with this. Fully adjustable for individual string height, string spacing and intonation travel. Plus it gets the silk off the saddle and uses original studs without modification.

The NEVERTILT 3 point solution:

There's a cap for the front stud anchor.

Cosmetically, not in terrible shape, and no breaks/repairs, which is a big plus. The pickups, particularly the bridge pup, have some corrosion, but work fine. The pickguard has a Bicentennial bird (it should be without the '76'). The neck is in fantastic shape, straight and true, though it's probably the beefiest of the five I have. Still and all, it's still a narrow T-Bird neck.
Perhaps it's nitpicking, but one thing that really bummed me out is that the vintage shop where it came from couldn't be bothered to put on a new set of strings and set it up! I know it's not a deal-breaker, but I mean....

I'd be annoyed, too. For how much I'm guessing you paid, a setup and new strings should be included.

Will definitely source out covers, just to complete it. I've been using GHS Boomers Med-Lights (.045-.100) since the 80s, so I'm still pretty loyal to them. However, I'll use anything comparable (D'Addario, frequently). I started using flat wounds on my P-Basses, as I was playing in a old-school country western group (Johnny, Loretta, etc. kind of stuff) for a good dead sound.

Embarrassingly, it's FIVE now!
I never used flats in the past, but about a year ago, right around the time I was playing with the country western group, I sat in with The Supersuckers for a song when they were in Austin. Their bassist when they do their country/acoustic set (their singer/bassist, Eddie Spaghetti, plays a Hummingbiord for those gigs) has a sweet old Precision with flats on it. It was such an eye-opening moment for me. When I got back to NY, I bought two sets and loved 'em.
