I suck with a pick. I am a fingerstyle guy all the way, but, I play a lot of metal and stuff that requires some pretty fast chops...I use the Flamenco style, believe it or not for a long time before Geddy made it popular , when I need to. You get the attack of a pick from the up stroke as it's done with the outside tip of your finger using your fingernail with the percussive thump on the down stroke from the pad of the fingertip. To me, it sounds awesome and you get picking speed when you need it.

I totally get that, I started out playing hardcore and only knew how to play with a pick and I pretty much had to. A friend introduced me to Primus and I threw away all my picks and never looked back again. I was seriously stuck in a rut while using a pick and my learning curve was flatlined and I thought I was done. Once I learned to play with fingers I hit a whole new level of personal elevation in my playing style. Now I can cruise at all speeds and gallop like Steve Harris.

Jason's story was the producer had him come in to record the bass, he used his live tone like he had in the past, it was just him and the engineer for the sessions. And then it turned out his mids were clashing with the guitars, and they basically mixed the album without the bass, there might be one or 2 parts where there is some super low in the mix bass, but basically they made the guitar sound all stupid woofy to compensate. There is no other album I have ever heard that has that stupid woofy "urmmmm urmmn urmmm" on the rhythm guitar. It is a very robotic sterile album, but it fooled us teens at the time. Lars' drumming on that album, and most Metallica albums, I would describe as "juvenile" after re listening to it as an adult who has played with drummers far better, not to mention all the others I listen to. Metallica is great for what they were groundbreaking in, and there is some serious talent in James hetfield, and every bass player to ever be in the band, but nobody can convince me that Kirk and Lars are top notch players, especially Lars. His business sense did help the band though, that is certain.

Nice way to bring the new guy into a nationally-renown project. Gagged and bound... a bit like the Rolling Stones employing Darryl Jones as a sideman, only without respect.

Not the same at all, really. Jones took the gig knowing he was a sideman and would have no creative control or input. Newsted was made a band member and was mercilessly hazed and toyed with. I doubt Jones had to put up with any of that nonsense. He shows up, plays, gets paid, repeat...

It's at a ski resort, we were doing a benefit for Veterans, we do a lot of benefits for our military, law enforcement, animals, special needs kids. A lot of the locations are not really set up for shows but we bring it all, from light show to PA...we will do anything for our Vets when they call!

This is a better rendition of my intent. I do realize there's a considerable difference there. It was the only example I could come up with. Thanks for the clarity.

I imagine Jones was paid above standard scale for that gig. I mean...Daryl Freakin' Jones!

There's a clip on yoot oob of Joey Jordison (ex Slipknot) sitting in for Lars. There's another clip of a tribute band doing their songs while they're out behind the building getting shot by Halfin (that dude can shoot some pics!). Hefield makes a joke about never having heard their some with the drums on the beat. Sorta "joking not joking."
