Thunderbird Club

Like others here, I had a busy day yesterday.

Part one
My daughter had her first piano recital. I was very proud of her, I didn't hear any errors and told her "see, the hard work and practice payed off". She told me that she did make one mistake but just continued as if it had never happened just as I had told her to. She played Piano Man, but she didn't like my version of it (which I offered to sing)*

*To the tune of Billie Jean
Billy Joel is not my teacher,
He's just a guy who plays the pi-ano, man!

Part two
In the afternoon, we went to Cosmofest Link Removed

We arrived later in the day; in time to see/hear Chilliwack but didn't spend a lot of time on the septagenarians - instead going through the exhibit hall to swipe our badges to try to win some music gear.

Finger Eleven (formerly the Rainbow Butt Monkeys) played. That was a great set; they rock. Part way through one of their hits, Paralyzer, they break into Back in Black but continue to sing Paralyzer. A great take on their own song.

For those that care, the band is local to me - they grew up in the some neighbourhood in which I live; there is a good chance my daughter will go to the high school from which they graduated.

The last act was Sloan. They did a good show. Because Nicko McBrain (of Iron Maiden) was doing a clinic, there were a lot of Iron Maiden t-shirts in the crowd. The singer made a funny joke about it being the most Iron Maiden fans they have ever had at one of their shows, but it started to wear thin the third time he said "Wrathchild" between songs. It would have been funny had they played a few bars of an Iron Maiden song in their own style.

I saw Sloan back in October (I think) and my complaint at that time was that they didn't play Money City Maniacs (their biggest hit). They haven't played it live for several years. I guess they must have heard the complaints from fans; tey played it last night.

** not my video and several years old

The kiddo was wiped out from a long eventful day, so we left with three or four songs left in Sloan's set. On the way out, we run into Rick from Finger Eleven and he stopped to talk with us. Got another picture of my daughter with a rock star.

Geddy Lee did a book signing at CosmoFest, but my brother and I elected to go get our books and have them signed at a different event earlier in the week. It would just be too big a PIA to carry around a heavy book for the day and they wanted you to line up 2 hours in advance for the signing. Well, it turns out that Geddy used that 2 hour line up to his advantage. He wandered around CosmoFest with Dave Grohl for a little bit before the signing.

That isn't Luke Skywalker, that is the lead guitar player.

Good way to have a busy day! Fun is good.

Part 1: Cool. My daughter wouldn't put in the time and no one would (gently) push her*. She's very knowledgeable musically but no ability. Oh. Like yer lyrics:thumbsup:
* I was temporarily outta the picture-long story:(
part 2: there aren't any "fests" anywhere near me to attend and concert prices have gotten stupid.
Sounds like a really cool day- and that coming from a septuagenarian.;)(74 in August)

Think the car will have to be a different colour(color), not my granddaughters white one.

I started playing only 3 years ago (my brother says it was a mid-life thing). It was a combination of things, but I like to learn new things and at that point I decided that since all my education is in hard sciences, I really should learn music. And I kind of wish that when I was younger, someone had given me a little push to learn (lots of factors there too). So, not wanting to repeat "mistakes" through generations, I have given my daughter the gentlest of nudges - but once every couple of months we discuss if she wants to continue.

Excellent! Cool way to spend time with your daughter. That’s what it’s all about. Mine officially moved to Boston on Tuesday. I miss her already. She had been home with us for about six months. My son is going to see Silversun Pickups with me Tuesday night. My wife has no interest in seeing them...music is a great way to bond.

That’s quite the day! Treasure those piano recitals and make sure you experience them. (If you’re recording video, don’t watch the performance on the screen as it’s happening)
