Thunderbird Club

The new to me NR is quickly settling in. I’ve put about eight hours on it and love the neck. It feels like the 1.5 on the ‘15, although the reach is a tad longer due to how it hangs on my body. It will be tied with the ‘15 as my #1. I’m loving it so much that I decided “what the heck.” I just ordered a Babicz that is set to arrive Saturday. While the three point is working fine, the bit of screwdriver wear on the bass and treble bolts was bugging me. And the bottom string wraps were on the saddles on the E and A which I never like but didn’t seem to be causing an issue. Rather than cleaning the bolts up and painting them, I’m just going to do now what I knew I’d be doing eventually. I learned my lesson re ordering as I’m still waiting on the Hipshot for the Silverburst. There were two available through Amazon Prime so I went that route rather than trying to save a few bucks.

Happy THUNDERBIRD Thursday!

The neck on the NR is thicker than the current Reverses. How do you find it compared to the Reverse?

no, you must have mistaken me for our Canadian friend. :D

mind you, I am slowly becoming a stereotypical Aussie. I bought my first Akruba last week.
I already have RM Williams boots and jeans. Next I’ll have Slim Dusty in my playlist..... oops
I checked out Akruba prices over here. For that I could get either two Glarry basses or one Squier. I’d rather have the hat. They’re very cool!

I just turned 60. Everything still works fine. Proof there's a God who likes the entertainment.

The main difference is that I don't feel the need to cause mayhem all the time so much any more. Pain hasn't been much of an issue, but then I'm fairly used to the random painful body part. So long as it's not big and constant in one place, and it doesn't stop me from doing anything, it's perfectly OK.
I turned 62 last Friday. I’m moving a bit slower than I did ten years ago. I’ve got bad knees (one of which, for no apparent reason, will go out and be excruciatingly painful for about three days to where I can’t put any weight on it, then it goes away) and developing cataracts. Growing old is the sh**s. But I don’t complain. At least not too much. I know most of the orthos in town and they’re never going to touch me.

I've had the VP that I bought from @DWLANG for a few weeks, and while I *really* liked it out of the box, it's grown on me. The .23" (~.6cm) narrower neck makes my hands even happier than the neck on the standard IV. I don't get quite the thunder by default, but EQing gets me close. I still plan to try Cobalt flats on this when I restring the std to BEAD[1], but the RS66s are growing on me, and finally not bothering my fingers much. We'll see how the CF silks do with the bridge spacing.

Even with the larger headstock, the weight isn't bad and there's not much dive. The body feels and looks great. Thanks again to all who recommended the VP. She's already my main bass squeeze.

[1] It's a great sound, but I don't need an angry piano too often right now.
This lack of low-end thunder was what I noticed with mine. My '64 is simply bigger sounding and has that Leon full big and low thing going on. So does the '64 Embassy. This is why I really like the Round Core Boomers on one of the VPs (or another set of String Joy round cores are nice as well). They bring some lows back without messing with my Amp. Even my '76 has more low-end as I recall. I haven't played it out in some time so I can't say for sure. I even thought about lowering the PUs on one of the VPs to see if it gets closer to the '64.

Happy belated BD! Glad you received a great NR in honor of the esteemed occasion! A well deserved gift even if to and from yourself.

Getting old ain't for sissies that's for sure.

Hey, you have a great flock of birds. Do you have a particular favorite or are there some things about each that you really like? Im finally having a bolt on version built. Any insight would be welcome. There are definitely some things that I prefer in a bass, like it being bolt-on and using a brass hipshot A-style bridge.

In my best Jean Shepherd voice, “the headstock will pop off that thing, kid.”

It may be a bit chunkier, but nut width is the same. I’m so used to different necks now that switching doesn’t bother me. I can feel the difference b/w a 1.5 vs, 1.625, but don’t think about it. The neck on the NR is finished nicely; nice frets, the finish on the back of it doesn’t get in the way of moving up and down. It plays fast. For me. But I’m no pro....

The 12/13 NR has a large volute at the neck/headstock joint that the reverse models don’t seem to have. It makes the first position feel much bigger...
