Thunderbird Club

Where are people on picks (with their THUNDERBIRDS)? Here is where I am and am wondering if there are further picking experiments I need to do.

Perhaps part of the difficulty I had with picks was that I was trying to use 1.0mm picks. I got a few to try out from my local L&M - a couple of 0.45mm and 0.5mm. Being thinner, they are easier to grip; a little pressure and they flex and fit just right. They also snap nicely over the strings. They make Ace of Spades pretty easy to play.

What thicknesses are others using, and what do you like/dislike about that thickness vs. thicker/thinner?
I'm currently using 7ender(gasp!)heavies for the few songs that require ye olde plectrum.

Sometimes that's a problem. Too many people posting their "fixes" and some have no idea what they're doing. You have to be careful and do your research to make sure you're getting good info.

As I said - one still needs to choose the correct one. I have successfully learned and implemented correct 'fixes' by surveying all available tutorials and determining which are legit.

As I've disclosed here in the past - I was primarily a finger-style player until joining Bond Girl a number of years ago. As many of the songs were Spy/Bond soundtrack songs, some with Carol Kaye credited on bass, I studied her sound (played with a pick) and emulated her muted style. (personally favoring palm-muting over a foam mute) At this point, I primarily play using a pick but use finger-style when warranted. At first, keeping the pic from falling out of my fingers was an issue, but now I can cup it in my hand while switching to finger-style and back again w/o losing it. It's kind of a light touch - reminded me of holding on to motorcycle handlebars; when I first started it was death-grip until I learned a light but secure 'grip' was the ticket. Keep at it and it'll come. Having that skill will broaden your vocabulary as a player. I mostly use med pics, but lately am favoring a bit heavier pics on the med-soft/hard side.

1.14mm -- extra heavy

I like that they are:
cellulose
black
extra heavy
say 'Gibson'
I was using 3mm purple plastic triangles. I think they were Dunlop stubby something or another. More recently, I have been using .75 or so mm nylon picks when using a pick. I can't say exactly why the change happened. I tend to be heavy handed, which means the heavy pick was dong some real damage to the bass. Fortunately the damage was to my P, not a Thunderbird.

Since starting my Burns of London bass project, I'm trying to use all those cool British ways of describing things, like plectrum and scratchplate. Haven't started calling my kicks plimsolls yet...

Well with all the cancelled gigs and all the bars closed, this time in quarantine has given me some time to get some good practice in. But more importantly, it's got me redoing my whole "Hi-Fi" setup. Should be picking up a pair of Boston Acoustic A400s soon to go with my '68 Sansui 5000. Next upgrade is a new turntable, aiming for a Dual 1219 most likely. Anyone else into old HiFi gear?

Not on purpose, but now that the stereo is old, the answer is that I'm into it. It still works. The newest is about a 15 year old CD player/recorder that can record a signal to a CD. It was the thing back when I thought I was going to have to record all my old LPs onto CD since they were wearing out and were becoming irreplaceable. Little did I know that CDs were going to vanish but vinyl would come back. The amp and cassette deck are Denon from the '80s. Turntable is Sony from the '80s. Speakers are Klipsch from the '70s. It doesn't need all that much power to be completely satisfying in place it is. No remote speakers, no wireless, no remote, no nonsense. Measuring time by the record side is a still a fully functional habit.

I gave up on wanting a Ric after getting to play several when the SoCal GCs we’re stocking them. Just didn’t suit me. It’ll be primarily Thunderbirds for me the rest of my journey.
I've mentioned before my experience with a Ric. I always thought they felt odd, but the neck and the body (but liked them being light). Bought one used anyway. It got a little better but still never felt right. Sound was OK. One drummer who did sound liked it--but loves all the 'Birds. No comparison with any bass I own. And Rics do have neck dive. The one I had did. It was one one bass I really wanted to love, but couldn't even like.

I had a Ric not too long ago that i had modded. Basically swapped out the original pup's for Joe Bardens version.
Awesome pup's. Still a little weak in the output from the neck pu'p, but great tone.
Point being. If it didn't have a bum neck, i'd still have it.
I liked everything else about it honestly.

I think the number of us in non gigging bands has gone up lately. Those gigging are in the decided minority now for sure. I have no idea when I'll even practice with others.
And I just learned to play just like Geddy Lee......
I have a recording session scheduled at my house on Friday... don’t want to cancel but it’s probably necessary.

Tomorrow's band practice just got cancelled. The Millenials were the guys who thought a little self isolation was a good idea. The drummer (70) and me (60) were game to go. Darn kids being all sensible. I'll have to play the FenderBird at home then.
